Morellian

The Morellians were a species of sentient near-Humans who originated on the planet called Morellia, which is located in Wild Space. This group held sway over the Morellian Commonwealth, an area policed by a law enforcement body known as the Morellian Enforcers. A notable aspect of the Enforcers was their preferred weapon: the .48-caliber Enforcer pistol, a slugthrower produced by the Morellian Weapons Conglomerate with power comparable to a heavy blaster pistol. Morellians lived for a long time, similar to Humans; an individual of 110 years was still in their prime. Despite this, by the era of the Galactic Civil War, the species was on the verge of extinction. Barosa Warren, a Morellian, was the leader of the Galactic Outdoor Survival School and posed a threat to the Rebel Alliance. Warren had four half-Human children who were Rebel operatives.

Biology and appearance

Being a near-Human sentient species, Morellians bore a strong resemblance to Humans. Each Morellian possessed a humanoid form, featuring two arms ending in five-fingered hands, a torso, and a head. Their hands had five fingers, each tipped with a fingernail. The face included a mouth containing teeth, a nose, a pair of ears, and two eyes situated beneath eyebrows. Hair covered the skull. The species also exhibited sexual dimorphism, with both male and female sexes. Males could grow facial hair, and at least one Morellian was known to have a red beard. What set them apart from Humans was their extended lifespan; at 110 years of age, a Morellian was not yet considered to be in their prime, and aging typically only became apparent around 160 years. Despite these differences, Morellians and Humans could mate and produce offspring, particularly when the male was Morellian and the female Human. Morellian-Human hybrids appeared fully Human, with one such individual having dark skin and black hair.

Society and culture

The .48-caliber Enforcer pistol was standard issue to the Morellian Enforcers.

The star systems of the Morellian Commonwealth, located in the largely unexplored regions of Wild Space beyond the main galaxy, were home to the Morellians; their homeworld was the planet Morellia. They were capable of communicating in Galactic Basic Standard.

Technologically, the Morellians generally lagged behind the rest of the galaxy. However, the Morellian Weapons Conglomerate, also known as MWC, was named after the species and specialized in producing simpler technologies, like the .48-caliber Enforcer pistol, a type of slugthrower. Despite using primitive ammunition, this weapon could inflict damage comparable to a heavy blaster pistol, although it had significant recoil that reduced accuracy when fired rapidly. Those Morellians who underwent specialized training with this weapon demonstrated the species' remarkable strength and skill.

While MWC's own security forces used the .48-caliber Enforcer, it was most notably the standard-issue sidearm of the Morellian Enforcers, a small organization responsible for policing the Morellian Commonwealth. Their uniforms consisted of full-body leather Morellian oilcoats and boots, along with durable backstrap gloves. The Morellian Enforcers had limited access to blasters, relying instead on slugthrower pistols and rifles.

History

By the time of the Galactic Civil War, despite their dominance in the Morellian Commonwealth region of Wild Space, the Morellian species was nearing death. In 2 ABY, the Task Force on Alliance Security, a branch of the Rebel Alliance, believed that the Morellian Barosa Warren was the last of his kind. Even so, the Commonwealth remained a recognized territory, situated outside the boundaries of the Galactic Empire. By the start of the Yuuzhan Vong War in 25 ABY, the Morellians were almost entirely extinct.

Morellians in the galaxy

Alliance operative Alton Lochner was a Morellian–Human hybrid.

Barosa Warren was a Morellian survival instructor, widely considered the foremost expert in the galaxy on surviving hostile environments. During the time of the Galactic Republic, he worked as a scout and Morellian Enforcer in the Morellian Commonwealth before retiring to become a scout in the Republic Survey Corps. In his late 110s, Warren purchased a small planet called OM813, located in the Ollonir Boundaries. Over several decades, he used terraforming to transform the world into diverse terrains and established the Galactic Outdoor Survival School. As the school's dean, chancellor, and main instructor, Warren amassed considerable wealth.

In 12 BBY, Warren had a dispute with a Samuac student named Sisquoc that escalated into a vendetta against Sisquoc and the rest of their graduating class, known as the Twilight Class. When Sisquoc and seven other members of the class joined the Rebel Alliance, Warren's animosity towards the students grew into a general disdain for the Alliance. In 2 ABY, the Task Force on Alliance Security produced a report on Warren, deeming him a threat to the Alliance's eight Twilight Class alumni.

Warren fathered at least four children with two women of Coruscanti descent. These Morellian-Human hybrids consisted of three sons and one daughter. Among these children, the sons Tole Warren and Alton Lochner, originally named Tiris Warren, served the Rebel Alliance at Suolriep sector headquarters, both achieving the rank of lieutenant by 2 ABY. Lochner led the Special Forces unit known as Eclipse Team as its Cloak Leader and was known for rescuing operatives in distress. Tole Warren served aboard the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser Silent Water, where he tracked the Tiss'shar bounty hunter Kal-tan-shi through the Veron Minor system. He survived the Charon invasion of the planet Stronghold before being reassigned to Captain Vanden Willard's command at Delta Base, where he deciphered Imperial communications. Meanwhile, Barosa Warren's son Roland Warren worked undercover in the Simik system, and his daughter Danlea Lochner, originally named Tara Warran, was a Rebel smuggling contact along the Ison Corridor.

Behind the scenes

Alliance Intelligence Reports, a sourcebook released in 1995 for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game by West End Games, written by Craig Robert Carey, J. P. Pietrzak, Trevor J. Wilson, and Bill Smith, introduces the Morellian character Barosa Warren as an adversary for players to face, and it describes four of Warren's half-Morellian children. However, the book only offers limited details about the species itself. Mike Vilardi created the illustrations of Barosa Warren and his son, Alton Lochner. Later sources mention related topics, such as the Morellian Weapons Conglomerate and the Morellian Commonwealth, but the species itself has only been named in 2006's The New Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology and 2008's The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia since their initial appearance.
