Biography

In the year 1976, Nick Maley became a member of Stuart Freeborn's seven-person team of make-up artists in England, tasked with designing the creatures for the principal photography taking place in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina. His collaboration with Freeborn lasted for a total of seven years. Regarding A New Hope, his work included Chewbacca, Snaggletooth (including Takeel, Zutton, and others), the Crockers (Hrchek Kal Fas, Sai'torr Kal Fas, and others), the Rat Alien (Snitch Garindan), the Bat Alien (Kabe), the Walrus creature (Mosep), Dr. Cornelius Evazan, [Wuher](/article/wuher] the barman, Dannik Jerriko, the Ugly character with the bubble pipe, The Fly Alien (also known as Tzizvvt), Ponda Baba, and Greedo.

Furthermore, he conceived the design for Nogard, a "lost dragon" from Dagobah, however, this character was ultimately cut from the final film.

Lucasfilm recognized his achievements at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in 2015. During the event, Lucasfilm's Pablo Hidalgo and creature conservationist Tom Spina formally renamed one of the Mos Eisley Cantina's characters "Damono Deomaley" in honor of Maley's contributions to the sequence and his assistance in gathering behind-the-scenes information.

In 2016, he successfully reconstructed an animatronic Yoda puppet, employing the same methods that were used to create the 1978 original. Subsequently, he received an invitation to showcase his recreation at Star Wars Celebration Europe held in London.
