Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber, alternatively referred to as Obi-Wan Kenobi's first lightsaber, is the lightsaber that Obi-Wan Kenobi both created and used during his time as a Padawan. Its design drew inspiration from the simpler weapon of his master, Qui-Gon Jinn. This particular lightsaber was lost by Kenobi during the Invasion of Naboo when Darth Maul, a Sith Lord, kicked it into a pit within the Theed power generator during their duel. Later, Obi-Wan constructed a replica of this weapon, which he used as a Jedi Knight until the [Clone Wars](/article/clone_wars] began, at which point he began using a new lightsaber with a completely different design. A diatium power cell supplied the power for this lightsaber, and it was encased by the lightsaber's notched hand grip. During the Mission to Pijal, the kyber crystal that powered the lightsaber blade was briefly exchanged for a kohlen crystal. This crystal swap ultimately saved his life because the resulting blade could cut through armor that was also powered by kohlen crystals.
The initial appearance of Obi-Wan Kenobi's first lightsaber was in the 1999 movie Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, which served as the first entry in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. The 2015 reference book titled Ultimate Star Wars was the first source to identify it.
Following George Lucas, the director, giving Ewan McGregor (the actor who portrayed Kenobi in the prequels) a tour of the studio, they visited the props department. There, the prop master showed McGregor a chest filled with lightsaber props, allowing him to select the lightsaber he would use in the film. His initial work with the lightsaber involved training for the duel against Darth Maul. He considered it an incredible experience and found the duels to be highly complex and rapid.
