Sollux

The Sollux, to which the enigmatic being Orphne belonged, were a sentient species of humanoids characterized by their resemblance to frogs.

Biology and appearance

Humanoid in form, the Sollux were either reptilian or amphibian. As a sentient species, they displayed light green and white skin, eyes that were purple and lacked pupils, and brown, branch-like hair adorned with orange, fruit-like growths. Their hands featured five bulbous fingers, while their feet had three digits pointing forward. Known for their extreme running speeds, they also possessed a tongue that could extend up to ten feet, ending in a suction-cup.

Sollux in the galaxy

The mysterious being Orphne resided in the Aleen underworld.

Aleen's underworld was the home of Orphne, a female Sollux. Despite not being Force-sensitive, she wielded magical abilities that originated from the light side of the Force, allowing her to transform into numerous fragments of white light. During the Clone Wars, Orphne and the Kindalo, a species indigenous to Aleen's underworld, triggered groundquakes that impacted Aleen's surface due to the displacement of the Great Seal, a barrier separating Aleen's surface and underworld. Orphne and the Kindalo held the Seal sacred, believing it was under attack by the Aleena. After the Republic initiated a humanitarian mission to deliver crucial supplies to Aleen, droids C-3PO and R2-D2 plummeted through the gap created by the displaced Seal. Orphne discovered the droids and attempted to consume C-3PO using her tongue, only to realize his non-organic nature prevented it. When C-3PO inquired about an exit from the underworld, she presented them with a riddle:

Following this, she transformed back into white lights and departed, leaving them to decipher the riddle. Eventually, they deduced that the answer was 'river', and the Great Seal was repositioned by the droids, preventing further conflict.

Behind the scenes

The species made its debut through Orphne in "Mercy Mission", the fifth installment of the fourth season of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The voice acting for her character was provided by Cara Pifko.

In a Q&A session, Dave Filoni, the supervising director of Clone Wars, addressed the question of Orphne's Force sensitivity. He explained that her ability to vanish as a cloud of light was actually a magical power. Filoni compared Orphne to a light side equivalent of the Nightsisters; while not directly a Force user, her abilities were rooted in the Force. Despite her species being labeled as reptilian in the databank entry, Filoni referred to her as a "frog lady."
