In the year 23 ABY, a group of Bartokk killers, contracted by Ambassador Yfra, attacked Reef Fortress. Their objective was the execution of Ta'a Chume, the leader of Hapes. The murderers reached the landmass using an attack vessel, disabled the power supply to the stronghold, and gained entry by scaling its walls. Jedi in training Tenel Ka, Lowbacca, Jacen Solo, and Jaina Solo, who were present at the fortress, eliminated a number of the Bartokks. They then saved Ta'a Chume by assisting her in escaping through the opening of her sleeping quarters, and they all fled the island on a small water vehicle. Jaina controlled the wavespeeder, guiding it into some lethal plant life, which dragged the assassins and their vehicle down into the sea. Subsequently, Ta'a Chume steered the wavespeeder to Fountain Palace, the personal home of the Hapan Head of State, where Yfra was apprehended.
Back in 23 ABY, Lowbacca, Jacen Solo, and Jaina Solo, who were undergoing Jedi instruction at Luke Skywalker's Jedi school located on the satellite Yavin 4, journeyed to the world of Hapes to visit their friend Tenel Ka. She was in recovery from an incident involving a laser sword at the institution, which resulted in her having only one upper extremity. They took up residence at Fountain Palace, the official home of the Hapan ruler, until an explosive device detonated in the dining area where they were scheduled to eat. Due to this hazard, the young individuals were relocated to Reef Fortress, a secluded and private retreat belonging to the Hapan monarchy. It was situated on a small island within an ocean on Hapes. There, the friends were under the protection of Ambassador Yfra, who served as the personal representative of the Hapan leader Ta'a Chume, who was also Tenel Ka's maternal grandmother. They were also guarded by some Hapan Royal Guards.
Later on, Yfra suggested that the young Jedi Knights take a brief excursion on the ocean using a wavespeeder. Unbeknownst to the young Jedi, Yfra had programmed the wavespeeder to lead them into an area filled with dangerous sea vegetation. Her intention was to eliminate them as part of her scheme to seize control of the Hapan government. However, Tenel Ka, Lowbacca, Jacen, and Jaina managed to escape the algae and manually steered the wavespeeder back to the island. Shortly after, Ta'a Chume arrived at Reef Fortress aboard her royal wavespeeder.
That evening, a team of bug-like Bartokk assassins dispatched by Yfra launched an attack on Reef Fortress. Having arrived in an attack boat, they cut the power to the fortress and destroyed the electricity source, thereby deactivating the energy shield. The Bartokks then scaled the fortress wall, entered through a portal, and commenced their assault on their primary target, Ta'a Chume. Jacen, Jaina, Lowbacca, and Tenel Ka intervened to assist the matriarch. After killing several of the assassins, they locked themselves and Ta'a Chume inside a bedroom, with the Bartokks positioned outside. Aware that the assassins would soon break down the door, the group climbed out the window using a rope and fled the island in a small wavespeeder. However, they were pursued by the assassins in their attack boat.
Jaina drove the wavespeeder into the Dragon's Teeth, a cluster of sharp rocks protruding from the ocean, with the hope that the assassins would crash. The attack boat sustained some damage, and three assassins were ejected from it, but it continued to pursue the wavespeeder. Jaina then proceeded to steer the wavespeeder into some carnivorous seaweed, anticipating that the assassins would follow. When they did, Ta'a Chume fired at their boat with a small hand weapon, causing it to lose balance. Consequently, the seaweed dragged the entire boat, along with all the assassins, into the ocean.
Ta'a Chume then piloted the wavespeeder to Fountain Palace, where she had Yfra arrested and subsequently put on trial. As a result of the raid and her other experiences at Reef Fortress, Tenel Ka concluded that she had recovered from her injury and was prepared to rejoin the Jedi academy with her friends.
The raid on Reef Fortress was first depicted in the book Young Jedi Knights: Lightsabers, intended for young readers, authored by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta, and released in 1996.
