Rancors that were raised by keepers were thought to be easier to manage and restrain, a trait that is a throwback to their initial domestication and the relationships they had with the Witches of Dathomir.

Sometime before 0 BBY, the Human slave named Malakili became a beastmaster and a rancor keeper for Jabba the Hutt's criminal empire. Malakili was in charge of taking care of Jabba's pet rancor, who was called Pateesa. Pateesa was kept under the Hutt's palace on Tatooine until Luke Skywalker brought about Pateesa's death in 4 ABY.
In 9 ABY, the Ugnaught Hunter known as Dizzy, who was one half of Team Slingshot, possessed a rancor keeper outfit that he was able to wear for the Hunters of the Outer Rim competition that took place on Vespaara. In that same year, a rancor in addition to its keeper were presented as a gift to the newly appointed Daimyo Boba Fett by the Hutt twins, known as the Twins.
