A Rebel Alliance fortress
A fort, more formally referred to as a fortress, was a roughly constructed building serving military functions, especially by civilizations with less advanced technology. However, it often took the form of a heavily fortified ground installation, strategically placed on battlefields or key locations, functioning either as a command center or a palace. During the Clone Wars, some fortresses were utilized by Separatist leader Nute Gunray on planets such as Cato Neimoidia and other worlds. These installations found usage among various factions including the Trade Federation, Gungans, Royal Naboo Security Forces, Wookiees, Galactic Republic, Confederacy, Galactic Empire, the Rebel Alliance, and the New Republic.
History
Throughout galactic history, diverse civilizations have constructed fortresses. Notably, Fort Tusken was erected on the planet Tatooine in 98 BBY, and it lent its name to the Tusken Raiders.
During the conflict on the moon of Alaris Prime, known as the war for Alaris Prime, which occurred between 39 BBY and 36 BBY and involved Wookiee colonists and the Trade Federation, the Trade Federation's primary base incorporated a fortress. The Wookiees determined that eliminating the fortress was essential to expelling the corporation from Alaris Prime. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn sought approval from the Jedi High Council to offer personal assistance to the Wookiees in the battle. This was granted, contingent upon the Wookiees constructing their own fortress. Achieving this required the Wookiees to advance their technological capabilities and gather sufficient ore for construction. Following the completion of the fortress by Wookiee workers, Jinn arrived at the Wookiee base.
The Jedi provided the Wookiees with information regarding various military options available at the fortress. These included training berserkers, fierce warriors wielding dual ryyk blades, hiring bounty hunters, and constructing Decimator cannons. During the Battle for Alaris Prime, the Trade Federation fortress was ultimately destroyed by Wookiee energy pummels.
Fortresses were also erected under the command of commander battle droid OOM-9 during the Invasion of Naboo in 32 BBY. These fortresses were built within the city of Spinnaker. They faced destruction at the hands of elements from the Gungan Grand Army. An additional two were destroyed in Harte Secur as the Gungan Grand Army freed their fambaas from Camp Six.
Darth Vader maintained a fortress on the planet Vjun, known as Bast Castle.
One Imperial fortress met its end at the hands of the Wookiees and Rebel Alliance on the Avatar Orbital Platform. This event also resulted in the deaths of Moff Darcc and Trandoshan slaver Pekt during the liberation of Kashyyyk. Another fortress was obliterated during the battle of Hanoon, near the city of Magentic, to liberate the city from Imperial control in exchange for the Vor'Na'Tu shard. Furthermore, an Imperial fortress existed on Coruscant in proximity to the Imperial Palace, coexisting with an airbase and war center.
Behind the scenes
In the 2001 LucasArts video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, fortresses function similarly to castles from the video game Age of Empires II, requiring the same resources and providing comparable units and research options. Building a fortress requires 550 ore units and becomes available to the player upon reaching the third technology level. A fortress includes a turret that automatically engages enemy ground units, along with anti-air missiles. Each civilization in the game can produce a unique unit specific to their faction, along with bounty hunters and blaster cannons. In the 2002 expansion, Clone Campaigns, air cruisers were incorporated into fortresses.
