The Rebel Alliance possessed numerous Nebulon-B escort frigates, deploying them across a spectrum of roles. The Redemption functioned as a hospital ship, with the majority of its offensive weaponry replaced by enhanced shielding and sensor arrays. The entire starfighter hangar was converted into a medical facility, accommodating over 700 patients. The injured under its care experienced a survival rate of nearly 98%.
Following the Battle of Hoth and adhering to the Rebel Alliance's dispersal protocol, the Redemption was assigned to the fleet's Fourth Division.
After Luke Skywalker's rescue from Cloud City, the Millennium Falcon transported him to the Redemption. There, he received a mechno-arm as a replacement for the limb he lost during his duel with Darth Vader.
The Redemption later took part in the Battle of Endor—a victory for the Rebel Alliance—where its medical capabilities were heavily utilized to treat the large number of wounded. Although the frigate survived the conflict, Able Nereno, a nurse serving on board, was killed in action when an oxygen tank detonated in his vicinity.
