Consular-class light cruiser
The Consular-class light cruiser, also known as the Consular-class cruiser, and often called the Republic cruiser, represented a type of starship produced by the Corellian Engineering Corporation. It was employed by the Galactic Republic for the purpose of transporting Jedi and diplomats to various trouble spots located throughout the galaxy.
Characteristics

The Corellian Engineering Corporation designed and built the Consular-class space cruiser. The Galactic Republic utilized these starships to ferry Jedi and diplomats to areas of conflict across the galaxy. The civilian versions of the Consular-class cruiser were basic transportation vessels without distinguishing marks. Those in diplomatic service were painted red, signaling their diplomatic immunity and serving as a warning against attack. For centuries, red had been the color associated with ambassadorial relations and neutrality for Republic capital ships. During the Clone Wars, these cruisers adopted the same color schemes as Republic attack cruisers. Ships originating from Coruscant were painted entirely red, while others only had stripes.
The Republic cruiser included a salon pod, which offered a secure meeting space for Republic officials and leaders of conflicting factions. A range of salon pods were available to accommodate different alien species. In urgent situations, the salon pod could detach from the main ship. Equipped with its own sensors, life support equipment, and engines, it could safeguard the diplomatic crew onboard. The vessel also featured several escape pods.
The cruiser had a total capacity of 9 crew members and 16 passengers. To enhance security on diplomatic missions, the number of organic crew members was minimized, with droids handling many ship functions.
While the diplomatic versions lacked weapons, some cruisers were modified with double turbolaser cannons and two concussion missile launchers. These modified ships served in the Judicial Forces and regional security forces, and some were reclassified as either Republic light assault cruisers or Republic frigates. Other cruisers were adapted into troop carriers and command ships.
History
The Consular cruiser began its service near the end of the Republic's era. An earlier model of the ship was constructed following the Ruusan Reformation and entered service around 990 BBY. Their creation stemmed from budget constraints, necessitating the construction of utilitarian and unpretentious starships. This quality appealed to the Jedi, leading them to adopt these ships.
Leading up to the Invasion of Naboo in 32 BBY, a Consular-class cruiser named Radiant VII transported Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi to the Trade Federation battleship Saak'ak orbiting Naboo. The ship was crewed by a pilot and a captain, both of whom perished when the Trade Federation destroyed the vessel.
Militarized Consular-class ships, known as Republic light assault cruisers, served the Republic Navy in the Stark Hyperspace War and the Yinchorri Uprising. These vessels were equipped with cannons and enhanced armor.

During the Clone Wars, some Consular-class ships underwent the Charger c70 retrofit, receiving weapon batteries and functioning as small frigates within the Republic's wartime Navy. Their combination of firepower and speed made them valuable assets to the Navy.
Civilians, such as Noggox the Hutt, also utilized Consulars. One of his freighters was seized by the pirate Dool Pundar.
The militarized Consular-class frigates featured a paint scheme similar to that of the Venator-class Star Destroyers. The practice of painting strictly diplomatic ships red persisted into the era of the Galactic Empire. Princess Leia Organa's ship, the Tantive IV, was striped in red to indicate diplomatic immunity.
A few armed cruisers remained in service across the galaxy during the Galactic Civil War. The smuggler Rif Taranu assisted the Rebel Alliance by using his modified cruiser Dead Reckoning to transport supplies for them. Several were observed at the Jubilee Wheel in the early stages of the Yuuzhan Vong War, and participated in the Battle of Yag'Dhul.
Behind the scenes
The initial designs for the Consular-class cruiser had a sleek, "Coruscant-look." After several revisions, George Lucas and Doug Chiang decided the cruiser should have a clear visual connection to the original trilogy. Following this direction, Chiang and the Art Department created a ship with a more rectilinear profile, echoing the design of the blockade runner from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. One of the final additions to the cruiser was the small antenna array above the cockpit. Lucas felt the ship needed "a little extra something" to draw the audience's attention to that area of the ship.
In Empire 22, the Consular cruiser was mistakenly depicted as a Personal Luxury Yacht 3000.
During a 2007 campaign for Wizards of the Coast's version of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game Dawn of Defiance, the pirate ship Blood Brother from the 1986 story The Scarlet Pirate, the third issue of the Star Wars: Droids comic series, was identified as a Consular-class cruiser. However, the vessel's appearance differed significantly from the Consular-class cruiser seen in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. To resolve this inconsistency, Abel G. Peña and Rich Handley later renamed the Blood Brother's class to Consular III in the first part of "The Droids Re-Animated," a pair of reference articles on the StarWars.com blog.
