Thirty years following the Battle of Endor, during the Cold War era, the Resistance orchestrated the rescue of Admiral Ackbar. Commander Poe Dameron, a pilot for the Resistance, was dispatched alongside the droids C-3PO and BB-8 to liberate Admiral Gial Ackbar. Ackbar was being held as a hostage by the First Order aboard the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer known as Subjugator.
The initial canon depiction of the mission to rescue Admiral Ackbar occurred in the 2016 comic book, Star Wars Special: C-3PO 1.
The rescue mission for Admiral Ackbar first appeared in the Poe to the Rescue episode of the 2016 LEGO Star Wars: The Resistance Rises series. This episode portrayed Admiral Ackbar as a prisoner of Captain Phasma on the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer Subjugator, located in the Bakura sector.
Poe Dameron, accompanied by C-3PO and BB-8, infiltrated the Subjugator using a hijacked AAL-1971/9.1 Troop Transport, successfully freeing Admiral Ackbar. During their escape from the Subjugator, they were pursued by multiple TIE fighters.
Subsequently, they entered an asteroid field, taking cover behind an asteroid. Here, Dameron had secretly stashed his T-70 X-wing starfighter Black One and Ackbar's Delta-7B Aethersprite-class light interceptor Daisy Mae. They deployed the Atmospheric Assault Lander as a diversion, and utilizing their fighters, they managed to eliminate the pursuing TIE fighters. Afterwards, they returned to the Resistance base situated on D'Qar.
The mission is also featured as a playable level in the Video game LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens from 2016, also titled Poe to the Rescue.
