Plot summary

An Escape from Tedium

The episode commences with workers of different species being awakened from their stacked bunk beds to begin their shifts at a factory. Droids are responsible for waking the workers up. On the lower floors, workers are shown shoveling coal into a furnace, while others are using tools. On the upper floors, workers in suits are shown operating pipes. A teenaged worker, named Daal, abandons her work area, taking off her overalls and helmet. She makes her way to the surface, where she is met by her two friends, Baython and Quinn.

Baython inquires about Daal's actions. Daal responds that she is leaving this place. Quinn asks about their destination. Daal answers that she is going to Screecher's Reach, a place Quinn believes to be haunted. Baython confirms that it is indeed haunted. Quinn proposes the idea of stealing some speeders. Keena, a purple-skinned alien, asks what's happening. Baython asks if she wishes to see a ghost. The four friends then proceed to steal three speeder bikes. As they depart, they pass by two walkers, causing one to stumble and fall. Daal rides with Keena, while Baython and Quinn each ride separate bikes. They traverse rocky terrains before riding through green fields.

A Frightening Tale

While seeking refuge in a forest, Baython narrates a spooky story about the Ghost of Screecher's Reach. Quinn asserts that their group will be the first to encounter it. Baython questions if they are courageous enough to enter the cave and confront the sound. Keena asks if these are merely stories. Daal retorts that the ghost is intangible but manifests in their minds. Quinn declares that he will kick the ghost's rear end. Keena playfully kicks Quinn before they begin chasing each other.

Baython expresses his aversion to returning to the workhouse. While holding a golden amulet, Daal asks him to contemplate the possibility of not returning to the workhouse or farms. While Baython believes that there are worse lives, Daal remains optimistic about finding better ones. Baython asks who would care for that "eejit" (idiot) while Keena and Quinn are playing. The two children shake a tree to make fruit fall.

The Location of Screecher's Reach

Baython urges Daal to be daring and take risks. He advises the two younger children to take it easy. Daal and Baython decide to proceed on foot into the mountain. Baython carries Keena on his back as they continue their journey. The four children approach Screecher's Reach, which Keena describes as a frightening, dark place.

Daal tightly grips her amulet and pledges to follow her path with strength and courage. She argues that some bad places exist to test them as they enter the dark cave. Quinn thinks the cave lacks scariness and complains. Baython tells him to be quiet and activates a portable lamp. Daal ventures deeper into the cave alone. Baython and the other children follow her. Baython calls out to Daal, but she instructs them to remain silent.

The children feel shadows shifting around them. Baython cautions Daal as a dark apparition materializes and shrieks at them, causing rocks and debris to fall. Keena urges Daal to come with them, but Daal tells her to go with Baython and Quinn. Daal becomes separated from her friends due to a rockfall. Holding the amulet, she vows to follow her path with strength and courage and believes it is all in her mind. As darkness engulfs her, she repeats the mantra continuously.

The Ordeal of Daal

A demonic figure wielding a lightsaber pursues her. Daal follows a light that leads upwards. She climbs towards the opening. The demonic figure chases her there and grabs her leg. As the cave starts to close, she begs for someone to give her strength. A piece of rock breaks off and traps the demonic figure, separating her from her lightsaber. Because of the sunlight penetrating through the cracks, Daal finds herself in a room with a makeshift bed. She notices that the demonic figure is a disheveled woman with long hair. As Daal seizes the woman's lightsaber, she emits a bellow of despair, which causes rocks to fall around them. Daal activates the figure's lightsaber, and the screen transitions to an image of the mountain as she swings her blade. The screaming ceases.

As dawn breaks over the mountain, Daal reaches the summit. Keena, Baython, and Quinn see Daal descending the mountain. Quinn asks Daal why she endangered their lives by taking them inside the cave. A pale Daal says that "she" was a real person, not a ghost. Baython asks Daal what she did. Daal replies that she was strong and clutches the amulet, which turns red. A voice from the amulet says that it is now time for them to meet. Baython asks Daal what the amulet is.

The Sith Mother Character

A starship shaped like a petal approaches from the horizon, and a female figure, known as the Sith Mother, disembarks from the vessel. Daal approaches the Sith Mother, stating that she had promised that the test was in her mind. The lady responds that the true test is always in her mind and that she did what she had to do. The Sith Mother assures Daal that she has passed and asks her to come. When Daal asks if her friends can come, the lady responds that the test was solely for her.

Keena asks Daal who the lady is. Daal tells her friends that the Sith Mother promised her another life and a way to escape a life of drudgery. The lady tells Daal to choose. A tearful Daal says don't look back. Keena cries while Baython holds her. Baython, Keena, and Quinn watch as Daal ascends into the bright starship, and Daal takes one last look back as the doors close.
