Shonmai

Shonmai, a Mon Calamari who served as a Mon Calamari Ranger, lived in 137 ABY. She was a survivor of the Genocide on Dac's initial phases, dedicating herself to the protection of her people alongside her fellow Rangers. Ultimately, Shonmai gave her life to eliminate Vul Isen's Sea Leviathan, a creature that threatened to accelerate the Mon Calamari's extinction.

Biography

Alongside Adriphar, another Mon Calamari Ranger, the Mon Calamari named Shonmai was conducting reconnaissance near the Devil's Crevasse. They detected an anomaly on their sensors. Recognizing that the object was too large to be an Acklay and not native to Dac, the two Mon Calamari cautiously approached the massive entity for a closer look. As they observed the creature, they became convinced that Master Treis Sinde and Captain [Tanquar] (/article/tanquar) needed to be informed about this strange and dangerous development. Approaching closer, they were spotted by the Aquatic Terrain Armored Transport guarding the beast. Shonmai urged Adriphar to retreat, but his Krakana was struck down by the AT-AT. He crashed into the monster, warning Shonmai to return to the Ranger Grotto before the beast drained his life force.

Distraught by Adriphar's sudden demise, Shonmai sped back to the Grotto, relaying the encounter to the other Rangers. Tanquar began preparations for an assault on the creature to protect the Mon Calamari refugees under attack. Sinde, however, advised against a suicidal attack, identifying the creature as a Sith-created Sea Leviathan specifically engineered to exterminate the Mon Calamari. The Rangers, unwilling to stand idly by while their people perished, prompted Sinde to reconsider and devise a different strategy: the Rangers would attack and destroy the AT-AT swimmer, he would use the Force to command a swarm of Devilsquid to emerge from the crevasse and attack the Leviathan, and two additional Rangers would use the now-empty crevasse to provide shelter for the fleeing Mon Calamari.

Devil's Crevasse

Shonmai in her Krakana

As the rebel forces advanced towards Devil's Crevasse, Shonmai disregarded Tanquar's orders to remain behind, compelled to fight for her people's survival. Upon reaching the Leviathan and the AT-AT swimmer, Sinde entered the Crevasse to communicate with the Devilsquid, while the Rangers circled the beast and engaged the swimmer, attempting to protect the fleeing refugees. However, the Krakanas' plasma weaponry proved ineffective against the swimmer's powerful shields until Darth Azard, a Sith Lord who believed the Devilsquid posed a threat to the Leviathan, ordered the pilot to drop the shields surrounding the hangar and launch the Shark fighters. Shonmai recognized this as an opportunity to disable the swimmer.

Sacrifice and Death

Shonmai alerted Captain Tanquar to the lowered shields, but the intense blaster fire from the swimmer prevented the other Krakana from assisting in its destruction. Seizing the moment and exploiting her proximity to the hangar, Shonmai set her Krakana's engines to maximum power and rammed directly into the swimmer's hangar, instantly destroying it at the cost of her own life. Her sacrifice allowed the Krakana to eliminate the Imperial Sharks, and the Devilsquid dragged the Sea Leviathan into the Crevasse to devour it. Although the Sith leaders escaped the wreckage of the swimmer, the Mon Calamari had triumphed over the Leviathan and were resolved to continue their fight.

Behind the scenes

Shonmai made an appearance in Legacy (2006) 33, a comic published in 2009 and the second installment of Star Wars: Legacy's Fight Another Day story arc. Her name was misspelled as "Shonm_o_i" twice in Adriphar's dialogue, but otherwise consistently spelled with an "a."
