A brief conflict unfolded in 1002 BBY amidst the New Sith Wars. During that period, Dessel, a Sergeant within the Gloom Walkers – a unit belonging to the Sith Brotherhood of Darkness – faced arrest by Lieutenant Ulabore on charges of mutiny during the Battle of Phaseera. This occurred even though Dessel had successfully guided the Sith forces to victory. Consequently, the troopers of the Gloom Walkers harbored feelings of resentment toward Ulabore. Not long after, while conducting a patrol on Alaris Prime, the unit was caught in an ambush orchestrated by Republic forces. Both sides sustained significant losses, but the Republic troops were ultimately compelled to withdraw. As the battle progressed, Lucia, a trooper within his unit, shot and killed Ulabore. Subsequently, the remaining members of the Gloom Walkers concealed her act of treachery.
During the New Sith Wars in 1002 BBY, the Sith Brotherhood of Darkness engaged the Army of Light in combat on the planet of Phaseera. As the battle commenced, the Gloom Walkers, a distinguished unit within the Brotherhood of Darkness, received orders from their Sith commanders to attempt an assault on a Republic outpost during daylight hours. Recognizing the suicidal nature of the mission, the Gloom Walkers voiced their objections. However, their commander, Lieutenant Ulabore, refused to reconsider the orders.
Consequently, Sergeant Dessel incapacitated Ulabore and assumed command of the unit. He led the Gloom Walkers in an attack on the outpost under the cover of night. They were victorious against the Republic forces, and Dessel's heroic actions throughout the battle earned him widespread admiration among the Gloom Walkers. However, Ulabore, enraged by Dessel's actions, had him arrested for insubordination. Some of the troopers in the unit believed Dessel was subsequently court-martialed and executed. As a result, the Gloom Walkers began to harbor resentment toward Ulabore, believing that Dessel had saved their lives and deserved recognition as a hero.
One month later, the Gloom Walkers journeyed to Alaris Prime, a moon orbiting the planet Alaris within the Kashyyyk system. While patrolling the moon, they inadvertently stumbled into an ambush laid by Republic forces—a situation that one of the troopers, Lucia, believed would not have occurred if Dessel had remained with them. The ensuing conflict involved intense close-quarters combat, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. Lucia, still harboring resentment toward the Gloom Walkers' commander for removing their most skilled officer, fatally shot Ulabore in the back at point-blank range, killing him. The brief skirmish concluded within minutes, after which the Republic troops were compelled to scatter and retreat.
The remaining surviving troopers of the Gloom Walkers silently condoned Lucia's actions. They refrained from reporting her act of treachery, and Ulabore's death was officially attributed to combat.
Twenty-two years later, Lucia—who had become a bodyguard for Princess Serra of Doan—enlisted the services of an assassin, the Huntress, to assassinate Gelba, a leader within the Doan mining caste, following the miners' killing of Serra's husband, Prince Gerran. Lucia drew a parallel between this event and her actions on Alaris Prime: Serra's husband had been killed and Gelba was responsible, so she killed Gelba, just as Dessel had been killed and Ulabore was responsible, so she had killed Ulabore. However, Lucia subsequently discovered that Dessel had not been court-martialed and executed; instead, he had survived and become Darth Bane, a Dark Lord of the Sith.
The skirmish that transpired on Alaris Prime received mention in Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil, the concluding novel of the Darth Bane Trilogy, penned by Drew Karpyshyn and released on December 8, 2009.
