A creature of the mynock variety, later called Smiley, made its home inside the exogorth known as Sy-O. Sy-O resided within an asteroid situated in the Hoth asteroid field. During the year 3 ABY, this mynock began to feed on the energy conduits of the Millennium Falcon. The rebel vessel had sought refuge inside Sy-O's maw. Han Solo, the starship's captain, subsequently used his blaster to kill the mynock. The lifeless body was then ejected into the vacuum of space as the Falcon departed through the exogorth's oral cavity.
Subsequently, the deceased mynock was discovered by Imperial Admiral Rae Sloane and Lieutenant Kanna Deltic. They were traversing the asteroid field aboard the Lambda-class T-4a shuttle named Bastinade. The pair retrieved the mynock's remains, transporting it to the Executor, the flagship commanded by the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Deltic analyzed the corpse, bestowing the moniker "Smiley" upon it. The body was then presented to Admiral Firmus Piett and Vader, with Sloane pointing out the blaster wound. This served as evidence that the Falcon had indeed concealed itself within the asteroid field.
A mynock, later to be known by the name Smiley, made its home inside the exogorth called Sy-O. Sy-O dwelled within an asteroid of the Hoth asteroid field. In 3 ABY, the Millennium Falcon, a Rebel Alliance YT-1300 light freighter attempting to evade the Galactic Empire, entered Sy-O's maw. It sought to conceal itself within the exogorth. Smiley then attached itself to the ship and began to consume its power cables. Princess Leia Organa noticed a mynock via the cockpit viewport, prompting the crew to investigate. Captain Han Solo observed the mynock and discharged his blaster pistol, resulting in Smiley's death.
Following this, as the Falcon accelerated and exited through Sy-O's mouth, Smiley's dead body was expelled into space, along with other mynocks. The other mynocks succumbed to the vacuum, and this collection of deceased mynocks was later observed by Admiral Rae Sloane. She was navigating the asteroid field with Lieutenant Kanna Deltic aboard the Lambda-class T-4a shuttle Bastinade. The pair gathered and froze the remains of Smiley, along with several other mynocks, before proceeding to the Executor, an Executor-class Star Dreadnought.
While Sloane gave her report to Admiral Firmus Piett and the Sith Lord Darth Vader, Deltic took the mynocks for analysis within the Star Destroyer's laboratories. She identified the blaster wound on Smiley's body and gave the creature its nickname. She was then summoned to Sloane's location by Vader. Deltic transported the mynock with her on a hovercart under a covering. She revealed it to Sloane and Piett, explaining that her analysis indicated Smiley was killed by a hand blaster, proving the Falcon's presence within the asteroid field. Sloane then instructed a pair of stormtroopers to dispose of the mynock's corpse.
Smiley was a substantially sized mynock, characterized by brown skin pigmentation.
Smiley made its debut appearance in the 1980 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. The creature's identity was later revealed in the short story "Lord Vader Will See You Now," penned by John Jackson Miller and released in 2020 as part of the From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back anthology.
