Spalex, a planet rich in thorilide, was situated in the Outer Rim Territories of the galaxy. Despite the substantial thorilide deposit, the Galactic Empire was deterred from mining the resource due to the resistance of the Spalexians. Later, the First Order discovered old Imperial survey data and coerced the inhabitants to surrender their thorilide reserve, until Resistance operatives intervened.

From the vantage point of space, Spalex presented as a red-green world illuminated by a solitary star. Its verdant atmosphere transitioned to a blue hue near the surface, revealing a rugged landscape characterized by reddish terrain and towering, gnarled trees bearing leaves of the same reddish color. The Spalexians, the indigenous inhabitants, resided in dome-shaped dwellings elevated above the tree canopy. These huts were arranged in a vast grid pattern, interconnected by ropes, some of which extended to the ground for access. Several huts relied on substantial pillars for support, functioning as load-bearing columns for the settlement, which spanned from the treeline to a series of low-lying mountains. The planet was notable for its extensive thorilide vein, a resource utilized by the Spalexians in their technology.
The Spalexians, the native species of Spalex, constructed their dome-shaped homes high in the planet's trees. During the reign of the Galactic Empire, Imperial survey records revealed the significant thorilide deposit on Spalex, prompting the Empire to seize control and attempt mining operations. However, unlike other planets that yielded to the Emperor's demands, the Spalexians recognized the subsequent devastation and enslaved populations suffered by those worlds. They resolutely refused to allow a similar fate to befall their homeworld. This unwavering resolve led the Empire to redirect its efforts towards more compliant planets, leaving Spalex's thorilide untouched.
During the escalating Cold War, General Leia Organa dispatched Resistance member Suralinda Javos and Black Squadron pilots Karé Kun and Jessika Pava on a reconnaissance mission to Spalex, with the objective of acquiring documented evidence of First Order atrocities. Upon arrival, the Resistance team established a base camp, and Javos deployed camera probes. She captured footage of a First Order officer threatening the natives of the village after they declined his demands to extract the planet's thorilide. Javos and the pilots debated whether to intervene or simply record the event, but Pava ultimately initiated fire upon the stormtroopers, prompting Kun to join the engagement. However, Pava sustained a glancing blow from a blaster bolt, and Kun was rendered unconscious, leaving Javos surrounded. She attempted to negotiate with the officer, informing him that the defeated pair were members of the Resistance.
