Black Squadron (Resistance)

Black Squadron, a starfighter squadron within the Resistance, was established by Commander Poe Dameron. This group, Black Squadron, was a major player in numerous conflicts during the cold war between the Resistance and the First Order. While they primarily utilized T-70 X-wing starfighters, they also operated other vessels, such as the BTL-S3 Y-wing Starfighter. Notably, they participated in the search for Lor San Tekka, journeying to various planets including Ovanis and Megalox Beta.

History

Mission to Ovanis

Black Squadron at D'Qar

General Leia Organa enlisted Commander Poe Dameron for the search of Lor San Tekka, and subsequently, Dameron handpicked a squadron of four pilots along with a technician, forming what became known as Black Squadron. The team included pilots Captain Temmin Wexley, Karé Kun, Jessika Pava, and L'ulo L'ampar, as well as technician Oddy Muva, and a collection of astromech droids, including BB-8. Black Squadron embarked on their first mission to the mountainous world of Ovanis (Muva stayed behind). There, Dameron encountered the Crèche cult and questioned their leader about Tekka's location, learning that Tekka had visited Ovanis in the distant past. Unbeknownst to them, Agent Terex of the First Order Security Bureau had blackmailed Muva into acting as a spy within Black Squadron.

Later, Black Squadron was caught in a conflict with First Order forces under Terex's command, who sought to retrieve information Dameron had obtained during Operation: Sabre Strike. While Dameron and BB-8 confronted Terex and his landing party, Wexley and the other pilots engaged First Order TIE/fo space superiority fighters in aerial combat above Ovanis. The battle was disrupted when the Crèche egg hatched, releasing two large flying creatures that engaged in combat. Dameron and BB-8 subdued Terex, forcing him to withdraw his forces. After the Crèche cultists left with one of the creatures, Black Squadron refueled and departed. To avoid escalating the cold war between the New Republic and the First Order, Black Squadron allowed Terex and his surviving troops to escape.

Rescuing Grakkus

In their continued pursuit of Tekka, Black Squadron traveled to the Megalox prison on the high gravity planet of Megalox Beta to interrogate the imprisoned Grakkus the Hutt. With assistance from Organa, Black Squadron bribed Warden Luta to gain access to the prison. However, Terex discovered their plan and bribed Luta to betray Black Squadron to the prisoners. Despite this obstacle, Black Squadron fought their way to Grakkus' fortress. Grakkus agreed to speak with Dameron and Terex but refused to disclose information about Tekka unless one of them freed him.

Dameron, with the help of BB-8 and the other astromech droids O-R10N, R2-HA, and R4, disabled the Megalox space station's gravity shield generator. Black Squadron also repelled an attack by gangsters hired by Terex to storm the fortress and kill Grakkus. After the gravity shield was disabled, Dameron forced Luta to allow them and Grakkus to leave the prison in exchange for restoring the shield. Before they could leave the system, Terex's starship Carrion Spike attacked Megalox station. Black Squadron drove off the Carrion Spike and acquired the data from Grakkus. In return, the Hutt received hyperspace coordinates and was allowed to depart. Upon their return, Organa instructed Dameron to halt the search for Tekka and investigate a potential spy within Black Squadron.

Heist of the Alderaanian data archive

Black Squadron using Clone Wars-era starfighters to acquire the data archive from Nu'Tiv's cruiser

Organa tasked Poe and Black Squadron with acquiring a data archive containing the remaining contents of the Royal Library of Alderaan, which the trader Mek Nu’Tiv intended to sell to the First Order. To conceal their identities, the four pilots utilized old Clone Wars-era starfighters. Upon Black Squadron's arrival at Nu’Tiv’s cruiser, she ordered her forces to attack, believing they were associates of smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca, who had previously impersonated First Order officers. Poe managed to land his Clone Z-95 Headhunter on the cruiser while the others engaged the enemy starfighters, but he was confronted by Nu’Tiv. BB-8 stunned Nu’Tiv, allowing Dameron to secure the archive. Unbeknownst to him, Solo and Chewbacca had already located the archive but, recognizing its importance to Organa, allowed the Resistance to take it and secretly facilitated Poe's escape. By the time he left the cruiser, Black Squadron had destroyed all of Nu’Tiv’s fighters, and the four pilots escaped with the data archive, returning it to the Resistance base on D’Qar.

Test of trust

Following the events on Megalox Beta, Poe embarked on a solo mission to Pheryon to meet with Suralinda Javos, a journalist from the Galaxy Beacon, who possessed information on the First Order's military buildup. After evading First Order forces, Javos chose to join the Resistance. Still wary of his fellow pilots due to the spy, Dameron brought Muva, BB-8, and Organa's spymaster C-3PO on a mission to retrieve one of the Resistance's droid spies on Kaddak.

Dameron and his team successfully rescued the BX-series droid commando N1-ZX, supposedly carrying critical First Order intelligence, including the location of Supreme Leader Snoke. However, this was a trap orchestrated by Terex, who intended to use Dameron and the droid to locate the Resistance base and destroy it with his Ranc Gang forces. Dameron and the droids escaped offworld in Dameron's T-70 X-wing starfighter Black One. Terex pursued them in his flagship Carrion Spike and a fleet of "Uglies."

During the journey, Dameron realized that Muva was the spy, suspecting that Terex had planted the false information to discover the Resistance base. Dameron exited hyperspace above an uncharted desert planet. Terex and the Ranc Gang followed, forcing Dameron to land on the desert planet. Meanwhile, Muva infiltrated the Carrion Spike and reunited with his wife Sowa Chuan, who Terex had taken captive to control Muva. Muva also encountered Terex's harem of slaves.

Dameron and the droids sought refuge in a cave. BB-8 and C-3PO stalled Terex long enough for the rest of Black Squadron to enter the desert planet's system. During the ensuing dogfight, Muva reprogrammed the Carrion Spike's battle computers to target Terex's "Uglies." Black Squadron provided cover for Muva and the escaped slaves' escape pods while battling Terex's Ranc fighters. L'ulo shot down one of the "Uglies" that destroyed an escape pod, but he was then shot down by another fighter. While Dameron and BB-8 fought Terex, First Order forces led by Commander Malarus arrived from hyperspace, eliminating the Ranc Gang forces and Terex's flagship but avoiding the Resistance. Dameron's Black Squadron teammates flew over Malarus' landing party as Dameron met with the First Order commander. Learning that she had come to arrest Terex for disobeying Snoke's orders to avoid open conflict with the Resistance, Poe turned the rogue First Order agent over to her.

Mission to obtain fuel

Black Squadron received orders for a mission to obtain fuel. Poe Dameron began piloting the fuel tanker Romary back to base after meeting with it, but BB-8 discovered it was designed to explode upon deceleration.

Mission to Spalex

Karé Kun and Jessika Pava of Black Squadron, along with journalist Suralinda Javos, were dispatched on a mission to Spalex to gather propaganda exposing the First Order's true nature to the New Republic. Simultaneously, Poe Dameron and Temmin Wexley searched for Oddy Muva. Following a tip from C-3PO's droid network, the trio traveled to Spalex, where the First Order was attempting to mine the planet's thorilide.

Mission to Cato Neimoidia

Black Squadron was assigned to a mission on the Colonies planet Cato Neimoidia to extract Lor San Tekka from imprisonment after his arrest for vault breaches.

Rescue of Lor San Tekka

After Terex, a former First Order operative, abducted Lor San Tekka, Black Squadron was placed on standby, ready to locate Lor San Tekka as soon as Leia Organa's tracker alerted them to his whereabouts. Terex abandoned Tekka in the Great Forveen Nebula, and Black Squadron was sent to rescue him, protecting a shuttle carrying a retrieval team from First Order TIE fighters.

Gathering allies

After the Battle of Starkiller Base, General Leia Organa sent Black Squadron to recruit allies and bring new systems into the Resistance. The squadron was joined by its newest member, Suralinda Javos (Black Four), flying an RZ-2 A-wing interceptor.

Battle of Ikkrukk

As part of their mission to gather allies, Black Squadron traveled to Grail City on the planet Ikkrukk. Upon arrival, they found the city under attack by the First Order heavy cruiser Fortitude, which deployed all available TIE fighters to engage Black Squadron in an aerial battle above the city's shield, which was weakening under the bombardment. Grail City possessed a FreiTek planetary defense grid with a central processor and multi-hemispheric tracking system, which Pava had trained on during her time in the navy. Pava suggested activating it if she could reach the command center. A small section of the shield opened, allowing Pava and Javos to descend to the surface, while Wexley and Kun remained outside to fight the TIE fighters. However, Pava's X-wing clipped the shield and crashed on the surface. As Pava and Javos fought their way to the command center, Javos was shot.

Pava provided medical assistance to Javos and encouraged her to continue. Outside the shield, Wexley and Kun struggled against the overwhelming number of TIE fighters. Wexley suggested approaching the heavy cruiser to deter the TIE fighters from firing for fear of damaging their own ship. Kun's stabiliser was hit, locking her heading, disabling her weapons, and sending her towards an enemy turret. Suddenly, Commander Poe Dameron arrived and destroyed the turret, saving Kun, who regained control of her ship. Dameron ordered the ships to retreat from the Fortitude, and as they did, the city's shield disappeared, activating the planetary defense grid and destroying the heavy cruiser. Prime Minister Grist promised to support the Resistance in gratitude for saving the city.

Disbanded

The squadron was disbanded sometime before the Resistance's Mission to Sinta Glacier Colony, although Dameron and Wexley continued its legacy.

Behind the scenes

Black Squadron was conceived and developed for the Star Wars: Poe Dameron comic book series published from 2016 to 2018.
