Unidentified Crèche elder

This matriarch, a female belonging to the Crèche society, resided on Ovanis and guarded an egg they considered crucial to the galaxy's destiny. Sometime prior, she became acquainted with Lor San Tekka, known as "the explorer" by the Crèche, during his two- year stay. While searching for Lor San Tekka, Resistance Captain Poe Dameron paid a visit to the Crèche matriarch and her fellow adherents. Soon after, they were embroiled in a conflict involving the Resistance, the First Order, and a pair of massive, winged creatures. In the aftermath, she and the other Crèche members departed on the back of the large, dark guardian.

Biography

Background

The Crèche matriarch was an inhabitant of the Crèche, a group that dedicated countless generations to the protection of a sizable egg inside the Cave of the Crèche, referred to as the Crèche egg. She along with her fellow devotees, viewed the egg as their responsibility, their reason for being, and their path to salvation. Their entire existence revolved around safeguarding and nurturing the egg. The matriarch was convinced that the egg contained their unborn savior, who would reward them for their multigenerational protection. At an unspecified time, the Crèche matriarch encountered the explorer Lor San Tekka, who spent a couple of full cycles with the Crèche, learning their customs and communicating with the unborn savior. The Crèche matriarch developed a sense of trust in him and shared her group's innermost secrets.

A wider conflict

The Crèche elder and Crèche egg

After Operation: Sabre Strike, General Leia Organa tasked starfighter pilot Commander Poe Dameron with a search for Tekka, believing he possessed the key to locating her brother Luke Skywalker. Poe and his droid BB-8 piloted their T-70 X-wing starfighter into the Cave of the Crèche during their mission to Ovanis. Initially, the matriarch and her fellow believers perceived Poe as a threat and confronted him with blasters. However, Poe managed to pacify them, explaining that he was searching for Tekka.

The matriarch informed Poe that the explorer had departed long ago and that she was unaware of his current whereabouts. Subsequently, she briefed Poe on the Crèche egg, emphasizing her unwavering commitment to protecting it from harm. The matriarch offered to share her group's confidential knowledge if Poe remained with them and became one of them. Poe responded that he was operating under a strict timeline. When BB-8 detected a tracker on his starfighter, Poe presented the tracking device to the cultists. Mistaking it for a detonator, the matriarch instructed her fellow cultists to subdue him. After a brief altercation, Poe successfully convinced the Crèche matriarch and her followers that he posed no threat and that the First Order represented their true adversary.

When a First Order landing platform led by Agent Terex arrived above the cave, the Crèche matriarch and her fellow cultists concealed Poe and BB-8. After Terex breached the entrance with his First Order speeder bike, she reprimanded the intruder for defiling the chamber's sacred energies. As her followers encircled Terex, she threatened to eliminate him. However, Terex had brought reinforcements in the form of several stormtroopers equipped with jetpacks. When the Crèche matriarch identified herself and her community and inquired about Terex's purpose, the First Order agent revealed that he was pursuing Poe.

The matriarch attempted to feign ignorance, but a stormtrooper detected the tracker's signal. When Terex threatened to harm the egg, the matriarch was on the verge of cooperating when Poe surrendered himself. Poe disclosed that his fellow Black Squadron pilots were engaging Terex's forces, resulting in a stalemate. To resolve the deadlock, Terex commanded his flametroopers to set the egg ablaze. When the Crèche matriarch protested and urged the worshipers to sing to the unborn savior, Terex mocked Poe for caring about these "fools" and suggested they negotiate.

The savior born

Eventually, the heat from the flamethrowers caused the Crèche egg to shatter. The matriarch declared that the unborn savior had arrived, marking the end of their long watch and ushering in redemption. She was confronted with a tall, blue winged creature. The matriarch welcomed the "savior" and implored the creature to show them how to redeem this sinner's world. However, the creature attacked them and Terex's stormtroopers, whose blasters were ineffective against its tough hide. The matriarch confronted the creature, inquiring if she had offended it. The winged creature seized her and attempted to devour her. However, it was attacked by a large black winged creature.

As the battle intensified, the stormtroopers' blasts caused the winged creatures to grow larger, resulting in their escape from the cave. Ultimately, the black winged creature prevailed over the blue creature, killing it by firing a bright beam through its throat. In the wake of the battle, the Crèche matriarch and her fellow cultists restrained Terex and his surviving troopers with blasters. After Poe and his fellow pilots released Terex and his men, the matriarch decided to let him go, recognizing that he could no longer harm them. She and her followers mounted the back of the black winged creature, whom they considered their savior. They allowed the creature to transport them to their new home. Before departing, she expressed her gratitude to Poe for saving them and confessed that she and her followers had been ignorant of the true nature of what resided within the Crèche egg.

Personality and traits

The Crèche matriarch was an elderly woman characterized by long grey hair, black eyes, and fair skin. She donned a beige and blue robe. The matriarch and her fellow cultists also bore blue markings painted on their foreheads. She devoted her entire existence to the care of the Crèche egg, which she regarded as the vessel for her cult's savior. She held the explorer Lor San Tekka in high regard due to his willingness to learn their customs. Initially, the matriarch harbored distrust towards Poe until he convinced her that the First Order posed a greater threat.

Terex was able to exploit the matriarch's dedication to the Crèche egg by threatening its destruction. The matriarch's faith in her savior was tested when the blue winged creature within the egg attempted to consume her. She came to view the black winged creature as the Crèche's true savior after it defeated the black winged creature. Her respect for Poe increased after he demonstrated his willingness to defend them, despite his lack of familiarity with them. Subsequently, she and her followers rode on the back of their winged savior.
