A provoker spineray Spinerays functioned as organic tools for the Yuuzhan Vong.
These creatures possessed a serpentine form and were naturally predators. However, the shapers also utilized them due to their capacity for monitoring neural pathways. Spinerays were also maintained in their unaltered state, finding utility in flushing out unwanted individuals from a given area. Furthermore, they were employed to inflict torture on victims during interrogations. At a minimum, two distinct types of modified spinerays existed.
The tracer spineray also served to stimulate pain receptors, though to a lesser degree. Following a Yuuzhan Vong's undergoing of an escalation, they were used to stimulate pain receptors at points where flesh was joined, assessing whether the new limb's nerves were integrating with the Yuuzhan Vong's body.
The interrogation spineray connects to the neural system of its victim, triggering the sensation of pain. Should the spineray detect attempts at deception or resistance, it will cause the victim to experience a burning sensation throughout their entire body, affecting all nerve endings and internal organs. Repeated attempts to resist can potentially lead to the victim's demise.

During an interrogation led by commander Tsalok, an interrogation spineray was deployed on the captured Jedi Yuledan at Dibrook's Shaper research facility.
On Yavin 4, Master Shaper Mezhan Kwaad and her adept Nen Yim employed a provoker spineray on the captured Jedi Tahiri Veila. The Shapers aimed to map her neural system with this organic entity, intending to Shape her into a Yuuzhan Vong, thereby creating an alternate personality known as Riina Kwaad.
Following Warmaster Tsavong Lah's receiving an implantation of a Radank claw, a tracer spineray was utilized to assess his pain receptors, determining whether the implant faced rejection.
At the time of the Jeedai heresy on Yuuzhan'tar, High Priest Jakan was convinced that the only solution to eliminate the heresy involved eradicating the heretics residing underground on the world shaped Coruscant. Consequently, he appealed to Supreme Overlord Shimrra Jamaane for the introduction of wild spinerays into the underground areas, with the intention that they would eliminate the heretical Shamed Ones. However, the plan was rejected due to concerns about the difficulty of controlling the wild spinerays.
