Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron: The Rebel Opposition

The Rebel Opposition, a narrative arc within the X-Wing: Rogue Squadron comic book series, spanned the period from July 1 to October 31 in the year 1995.

Story Synopsis

The mission for Rogue Squadron is to execute a critical food supply transport from Cilpar to Mrlsst. Although Cilpar isn't officially aligned, Targeter, an Alliance envoy, has made contact with a Cilparian resistance group eager to join the Alliance. As the Rogues enter Cilpar's airspace, they face an assault by TIE fighters. Wes Janson is downed, prompting Tycho Celchu to land and rescue him.

The remaining squadron members proceed to their temporary base, located just west of Kiidan. They soon discover that the food convoy was intercepted due to an informant alerting the Imperial forces. The squadron then decides to locate Targeter and her underground network. Meanwhile, Tycho retrieves Janson, and they seek refuge in a cave. Back at the Alliance's camp, a faction of the underground, led by Elscol Loro, arrives. They escort the Alliance team to Tamarack, Loro's former residence, to illustrate the atrocities committed by Moff Boren Tascl against the local population while hunting Rebels. This action essentially portrays the Rebels as equally dangerous as the Imperials.

Within the cave, Tycho and Janson encounter a woman who they initially mistake for Leia Organa. However, she is actually Winter, known as Cilpar's "Targeter". Back in Tamarack, Tascl's Imperial forces launch an attack on the underground and Alliance forces. Despite the assault, they manage to escape. Concurrently, Tycho infiltrates the local Imperial base, posing as a TIE Interceptor pilot, with the intention of aiding Janson and the others. Soon after, he is compelled to join the local TIE squadron in attacking the Rebels and the underground. During the ensuing conflict, Tycho is shot down by his own astromech droid piloting his X-wing--or so he believes. It is, in fact, Winter, who then returns to Janson's side.

Shortly after Winter's return to the cave, Vance Rego, a member of the underground, arrives with a squad of stormtroopers and captures Janson and Winter (mistaken for Leia). In the jungle, Tycho is "rescued" by the Imperials, only to find himself in the same transport as Winter. Vance, the traitor, informs the Rebels and underground that Princess Leia (Winter) has been captured. They decide to assault the Imperial base to rescue "Leia." During the battle, Tycho initially fights alongside the Imperials before turning against them. Vance is exposed as a spy and thrown from a transport by Groznik, Loro's Wookiee companion, and subsequently devoured by a ronk in the jungle. Groznik almost kills Moff Tascl for the murder of Throm Loro (Elscol's husband), but instead, they take him into custody. With the local Imperial forces significantly weakened, the Rogues depart for Mrlsst, accompanied by Elscol as their newest squadron member, and Groznik.

Production Notes

The original four-part comic book series had several errors in spelling and continuity, which were corrected in Star Wars Omnibus: X-Wing Rogue Squadron Volume 1. These included:

  • Plourr suggesting that Coruscant was under New Republic control, which wouldn't happen for a couple more years.
  • Wedge referring to a "bfass tunnel" in the Death Star II, which was corrected to 'bypass tunnel'.
  • Elscol's comment about there being no Imperial troops within 'a hundred klacks' was changed to 'klicks'.
  • Correcting Mrisst to Mrlsst, which is the correct name of the planet where the Rogues are headed in the subsequent story arc.
  • Significant adjustments to the Targeter story thread to improve its coherence.
  • Numerous corrections to spelling, punctuation, and minor adjustments to dialogue.
