Publisher's Synopsis

"THE ESCAPE" – PART 3! Could romance be blossoming between Luke and Tula? How about between HAN AND LEIA?! What about romance between some stranded rebels and some seriously hungry, oversized monsters? Absolutely not. That last scenario is a definite no.

Detailed Plot

Battles with Thanraxes

Observing Luke Skywalker's hesitation, Thane Markona urges Skywalker to fully commit. Noticing Skywalker concealing a lightsaber, he questions whether Skywalker is proficient with it or if he simply found it in the scrap heap. After Skywalker assures him of his lightsaber skills, they both rush to rescue a farmer who is being attacked by a massive Thanrax. Markona uses his vibroblade gauntlet to fatally wound the creature by slashing its throat.

The remaining four thanraxes then focus their attention on Markona and Skywalker, who engage them in combat with their respective weapons. One wounded thanrax attempts to flee towards the village, and Skywalker manages to grab onto its back. Simultaneously, Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa are enjoying a peaceful meal at the cantina when they witness Luke being dragged away by the thanrax.

As the thanrax approaches Tula Markona, Skywalker intervenes by plunging his lightsaber directly into the creature's head, killing it instantly. Solo jokes that Skywalker is trying to impress Tula, while Tula expresses interest in Skywalker's lightsaber, noting that it reminds her of her grandmother, whom Skywalker correctly infers was a Jedi.

Thane Markona dispatches several warriors to pursue the thanraxes that have retreated westward. Markona expresses his gratitude to Skywalker for his assistance, suggesting that someone with his abilities will find plenty to do during his time on Hubin. Skywalker declines the offer, explaining that he has people who depend on him off-world. Markona responds that his people lack transmitters and that leaving the planet is impossible until traders arrive. Markona and Solo encourage Skywalker to take advantage of the local hospitality, while Leia sarcastically remarks that there are worse places to be stranded.

Guests of the Markona Clan

Markona proposes to help Skywalker improve his fighting skills. Later, Markona and Skywalker practice with vibroblades, but Markona suggests that a lightsaber duel would be more engaging. After the training session, Skywalker connects with R2-D2 and C-3PO, the latter of whom is now equipped with a repulsorlift chair. Skywalker begins working on constructing a makeshift transmitter. MK-1 offers to assist Skywalker in building it, and C-3PO convinces him to accept the droid's help.

A week passes, and the rebels continue to enjoy their unexpected vacation on Hubin. When Leia discovers Han and Luke relaxing on the grass, Skywalker inquires if she has come to admire the sunset. Skywalker admits that he is feeling restless, comparing it to his former home. Solo reminds Skywalker that Tula has invited him on a romantic stroll. Once Skywalker departs for his date, Solo comments that six months in the military should have instilled better organization in him.

Solo recounts to Leia his brief stint with the Imperial Navy before his transfer to the Imperial Army. Solo also alludes to his past relationship with Qi'ra, but implies that he is not yet emotionally ready for another serious romance.

A Walk with Tula

Meanwhile, Tula tells Skywalker that she trusts him enough to share details about their respective families and his Force gifts. She explains that Skywalker's actions on Hubin have demonstrated his trustworthiness. Skywalker confesses that he struggles with romantic interactions. Tula advises Skywalker that her grandmother always told her to follow her heart.

Tula reveals that her grandmother was a Jedi who fell in love with a charming outsider and subsequently abandoned the Jedi Order, believing that the Jedi did not truly embody the Force. She and her lover settled on Hubin, where they had a child, her father Markona. Her grandmother imparted all her knowledge to her father, while her grandfather taught him everything she wished he hadn't.

After the death of his parents, Markona established a mercenary group known as Clan Markona and later met Tula's mother, who worked as a field technician but died during a mission. In her final wishes, she requested that Tula's father provide their daughter with a joyful childhood and protect the clan. Clan Markona agreed and made Hubin their permanent home, effectively claiming it as their private territory. Tula notes that the first generation of children raised in peace are beginning to crave excitement and action.

Skywalker tells Tula that he always desired to leave his home, even before the Empire brutally murdered his family. Tula senses Skywalker's inner turmoil and assures him that she shared her story to show her understanding and care. Tula admits that she instructed MK-1 to assist Skywalker in building a transmitter.

While Tula believes Skywalker is a good person, she worries that activating the transmitter will attract unwanted attention to Hubin. She implores Skywalker to reconsider his plans before doing "something that he can't take back."

Rebel Secrets Unveiled

Later, in the dining area, Skywalker informs Princess Leia and Han Solo about his risky plan to escape the planet. Leia objects, stating that they are not prepared, which provokes an angry response from Luke. Solo attempts to calm Luke down, but Luke expresses his frustration with their inaction. Leia clarifies that the situation is complex and that she simply needs more time on Hubin. Luke complains that the longer they remain on Hubin, the more time they are giving the Empire to wreak havoc on the galaxy.

Luke angrily departs, instructing R2-D2 to follow him, and walks past Tula. Back in his quarters, Skywalker orders R2-D2 to activate the transmitter. Meanwhile, Solo expresses regret over Skywalker's outburst but suggests that Leia's secrecy contributed to the problem. Leia responds that she struggles to maintain hope after her mistake in trusting Trios. Leia leads Solo into her room, where she reveals her plan to permanently destroy Shu-Torun as revenge for Trios' betrayal.
