Hubin

Hubin, a satellite body located within the Dene Gois Cluster of the Outer Rim Territories, served as the home for the reclusive Clan Markona and their leader, Thane Markona. To evade detection by the Galactic Empire while navigating the Dene Gois Cluster, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo were compelled to make an emergency landing on Hubin using an escape pod. Following their arrival, they encountered Thane Markona, who graciously offered them refuge within his estate. Approximately a month later, the Empire became aware of the presence of the rebels on Hubin, dispatching SCAR Squadron with orders to apprehend them. Markona, having made the decision to align himself with the Rebellion, orchestrated the evacuation of his clan, who commandeered the squadron's transport to facilitate their escape. Tragically, Markona was killed by Sergeant Kreel, who was subsequently marooned on the moon along with the remaining members of SCAR Squadron. The squadron managed to construct a transmitter, successfully alerting the Empire to the rebels' impending mission.

Overview

Situated within the dense Dene Gois Cluster of the Outer Rim Territories, Hubin was one of many moons in the region. Its terrain featured both rugged mountainous regions and expansive wooded areas. Portions of the forests were cleared to accommodate the construction of a settlement, resulting in open fields of vegetation. The atmospheric composition of Hubin was suitable for human respiration, and precipitation was a common occurrence. Indigenous creatures known as thanrax inhabited Hubin, frequently causing disturbances for its residents.

Background

Clan Markona's Origins

Following the union of a former Jedi Knight and a dashing outsider, they established a tranquil existence on Hubin. Subsequent to their deaths, their descendant, Thane Markona, departed Hubin to establish a private military enterprise. The passing of Markona's spouse prompted him to abandon his mercenary pursuits and embrace retirement. Clan Markona undertook a final assignment that granted them the right to establish a settlement on Hubin, where they evolved into a peaceful and isolated community. On the moon, they erected a community, in addition to an elaborate residence for Markona and his daughter Tula. During the Imperial period, the Galactic Empire permitted Clan Markona to maintain their undisturbed presence on the moon.

Flight from Imperial Forces

The rebels encounter Markona

In approximately 2 ABY, subsequent to the assault by the Galactic Empire on the Mako-Ta Space Docks belonging to the Rebel Alliance, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo, accompanied by the androids C-3PO and R2-D2, sought refuge on Corosi 7. On Nar Shaddaa, Solo enlisted the services of smuggler Sana Starros to provide transportation aboard her vessel, the Volt Cobra. After a brief stop on Barnahof to gather intelligence about a contact from Bodo Linx, the rebels formulated a plan to travel to Brentaal IV, transiting through the Dene Gois Cluster to minimize the risk of detection. However, an Imperial-class Star Destroyer obstructed their course, compelling the rebels to utilize an escape pod for an emergency landing on Hubin.

Shortly after their arrival, they were pursued by a thanrax, which was driven away by Thane Markona. After inquiring about the rebels' presence on Hubin, Markona escorted them back to his residence, providing them with accommodations. Following introductions to himself and his daughter, Tula led Skywalker and Solo on a tour of the clan's settlement. When a group of thanrax initiated an attack on several dwellings within the village, Thane Markona and Luke intervened to resolve the situation. The rebels resided on Hubin for the following week, during which Luke attempted to construct a transmitter, and Leia devised strategies to exact retribution on Queen Trios and Shu-Torun. Luke activated his transmitter, but its signal was intercepted by Thane Markona, who had prior knowledge of its existence. Despite this, the Empire's SCAR Squadron managed to ascertain the rebels' location on Hubin through Sana Starros, who had been captured and interrogated. Approximately a month into the rebels' sojourn on Hubin, the members of SCAR Squadron arrived and were greeted by Markona, who, in accordance with the clan's martial tradition, challenged Sergeant Kreel and Luke to a trial by combat.

Clan Markona evacuates Hubin

However, the duel was a ruse, orchestrated by Markona and his daughter. Luke made his escape using a smoke device and Markona diverted the stormtrooper away. Tula instructed their protocol droid MK-1 to activate the alarm and assemble the clan while Markona engaged SCAR Squadron in a firefight to impede their progress. The members of Clan Markona departed their homes, boarding the Imperial vessel under the guidance of Tula Markona. As the Thane was gunned down by Kreel, the clan departed Hubin to join their allies in the Rebel Alliance. With the loss of their transport, SCAR Squadron was stranded on Hubin, with only MK-1 and the thanrax as company. The squadron repurposed Markona's estate as their base of operations, and while examining data systems, Cav retrieved Organa's plans, which she had attempted to erase. They eventually succeeded in constructing a transmitter and transmitting a warning about Organa's operation to Shu-Torun, which was relayed to Commander Kanchar. Kanchar authorized a rescue mission to retrieve SCAR Squadron, while also initiating countermeasures against the rebel operation.

Demographics

Clan Markona, despite their heritage as warriors, maintained a secluded and insular lifestyle on Hubin. Their existence involved less reliance on technology compared to other worlds, lacking vehicles or communication systems. Many of the clan's inhabitants were engaged in agricultural activities, utilizing rudimentary tools and equipment. While the clan primarily consisted of humans, there were also several sentient species present, including Duros, Morseerians, Saurin, and Trandoshans. The clan was ultimately compelled to evacuate the moon, joining the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire.

Behind the scenes

Hubin made its debut in Star Wars (2015) 56, a canonical comic book authored by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Andrea Broccardo, and released on November 7, 2018. According to Gillen, the environment of Hubin drew inspiration from a visit to a stately home in Scotland.
