SCAR Squadron, also designated as Task Force 99, represented an elite squad of stormtroopers within the 501st Legion of the Galactic Empire, under the leadership of Sergeant Kreel. One of the assignments they undertook involved an investigation of Sunspot Prison, a facility that had been recently vacated by forces of the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

Sharing its moniker with Clone Force 99—a Special Operations Brigade unit of the Republic composed initially of four, and later five, genetically defective clones—Task Force 99 stood as a highly autonomous unit of Imperial troopers belonging to the Stormtrooper Corps. The team consisted of six specialists, namely Aero, Cav, Mic, Misty, Shrap, and Zuke, each possessing expertise in a distinct operational domain. An officer holding the sergeant rank -or its equivalent- commanded them; Darth Vader personally selected Task Force 99 leaders based on their extraordinary performance in prior engagements. Orders for the squad originated directly from Imperial officers of Admiral rank or higher, as well as from Darth Vader himself, and their operations occurred outside the standard Stormtrooper Corps' structure and organizational framework.
The members of Task Force 99 employed a diverse array of heavily modified and unique gear, including their stormtrooper armor, which was custom-tailored to meet the specific requirements of each trooper and incorporated elements derived from starfighter pilot, clone commando, and death trooper armor designs. Furthermore, they utilized a broad spectrum of weaponry customized for each individual trooper, encompassing devices ranging from grenade launchers to sniper rifles.
Mirroring the organizational structure of the Galactic Republic's Clone Force 99, Task Force 99 was established a minimum of two years prior to the skirmish on the Ghost Moon, initially operating under the command of a sergeant, until Sergeant Kreel eventually assumed leadership.
The Rebel Alliance initially became aware of the squad's existence through investigations conducted by their Intelligence Service at a outpost situated on Primtara following an incident that occurred there.
Following the siege of [Sunspot Prison](/article/sunspot_prison] by a number of days, Task Force 99 made their way to the now-desolate station, their mission being to locate Kolar Ludd. As the squad debated their next move, Kreel revealed that their original objective was no longer relevant, as they had been given new instructions.
The squadron successfully apprehended the rebel Admiral Verette. After killing him, they fastened his body to the front of a Taylander shuttle to create a diversion while they infiltrated the Rebel-controlled Star Destroyer known as the Harbinger. Despite their efforts, they were unable to prevent the Rebels from breaking the Siege on Tureen VII, though they did manage to capture the protocol droid C-3PO.
The squad later took the smuggler Sana Starros into custody, subjecting her to torture in an attempt to ascertain the whereabouts of Leia Organa's team, eventually tracing them to Hubin. Upon their arrival, they encountered Thane Markona of Clan Markona. Markona extended an invitation of hospitality, which Kreel accepted, leading to a duel with Luke Skywalker. Markona then chose to support the rebellion, creating a distraction for SCAR Squadron while both the Clan and Leia Organa's team made their escape in SCAR Squadron's shuttle. This turn of events left them stranded for several months, as Hubin was an isolated moon.
Task Force 99 derives its name from Clone Force 99, also recognized as the Bad Batch. Both units shared the characteristic of being composed of members, each possessing a specialized skill set, setting them apart from others within their respective corps.
