During the Galactic Civil War, the Alliance to Restore the Republic dispatched Luke Skywalker alongside Leia Organa on a quest to the mineral planet of Crait. Their objective was to assess its suitability as a potential rebel headquarters.
Following the destruction of the Death Star, the Rebel Alliance found themselves fleeing the Galactic Empire, urgently seeking a new base location. Princess Leia Organa personally undertook the responsibility of discovering a refuge for the Alliance, enlisting the aid of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo.

After the Empire's attack against the Alliance Fleet, they fell back to Baraan-Fa. It was there that Organa conversed with Chancellor Mon Mothma regarding the possibility of utilizing Crait as a site for their fresh base. The Nupayuni Mining Consortium had abandoned it several decades prior.
However, Mothma expressed her disapproval of employing a "dead" planet. Despite this, Organa informed her that Trusk Berinato had assured her father that Crait presented a viable option for a base. Despite Mothma's reservations, she sanctioned Organa's undertaking of a survey expedition to Crait.
Organa, accompanied by Captains Skywalker, Solo, Chewbacca, and Wedge Antilles, journeyed to Crait aboard the Millennium Falcon and a GR-75 medium transport stocked with equipment. Upon landing, they were greeted by Berinato and his mining droids. Organa and the survey team then accompanied Berinato to inspect the mines, utilizing their V-4X-D ski speeders. During this time, Solo grew wary of Berinato's intentions. Skywalker, together with Antilles, initiated the digging of trenches outside the mine, encountering difficulties due to several worms.
During a journey using their speeders, Antilles and Skywalker encountered a collection of flash-dried corpses. Recognizing the cause of death from similar instances, Skywalker swiftly deduced that a salt storm was responsible, one of such magnitude that it would maroon them on Crait for years.

However, Organa informed Berinato that their stay on Crait would be brief. Organa was aware that he had signaled the Empire, resulting in the deployment of SCAR Squadron to their location. Despite this act of betrayal, Organa was prepared to allow Berinato to aid in their escape, but he declined. Consequently, Organa, Skywalker, Solo, and Chewbacca mounted their ski speeders to confront SCAR Squadron directly as the initial phases of the storm commenced. The two groups engaged in combat. Sergeant Kreel, the commander of SCAR Squadron, then brandished his lightsaber and fought Skywalker. Following the skirmish with the remaining SCAR troopers, Solo, Chewbacca, and Organa returned to the Falcon. However, they were then confronted by Berinato and his droids, who prevented their departure.
Skywalker persisted in his duel with Kreel until he shattered his lightsaber. With assistance from Antilles, SCAR Squadron was compelled to retreat in a weakened state. Berinato then shot Solo in an attempt to force her to accompany him. However, Organa managed to utilize Solo's blaster to disarm Berinato by shooting his blaster from his grasp. Skywalker, along with the rest of the survey team, arrived and departed Crait aboard the Falcon.

While aboard the Falcon, Organa conveyed to Mothma that Crait was unsuitable as a base. Organa's survey team was also compelled to abandon several Spiezoc v-120, v-232 artillery emplacements, the ski speeders, and an armory containing blaster rifles and pistols. The Rebel Alliance ultimately established a Base on Hoth. Years following the Galactic Civil War, Crait had faded from contemporary star charts.
In 34 ABY, Organa, now holding the rank of General within the Resistance, guided the surviving members to Crait's outpost while being pursued by the First Order's forces. There, the Resistance employed the discarded Alliance equipment against the First Order until the Falcon rescued the survivors and facilitated their escape.
