Larlarb has a reputation as the costume designer for a variety of films and television series, such as American Gods, No Time to Die, Gemini Man, Slumdog Millionaire, and Ten Thousand Saints.

Biography

When she was a child, Suttirat Anne Larlarb first experienced the Star Wars movies. She went to college to study painting and had aspirations of working in the fine arts. She took a single design class which sparked her interest because it blended drawing and fashion along with art history, anthropology, and psychology. Larlarb started her career in the entertainment industry as an art director after graduation, but she also wanted to design costumes.

When Deborah Chow, who directed the Obi-Wan Kenobi television series, first spoke with Larlarb, Chow was impressed by Larlarb's discussions of culture and history in relation to costume. The director mentioned that Larlarb's methodology for the show American Gods would be quite similar to Obi-Wan Kenobi uncovering all of the cultural stones necessary to create the worlds seen in the series. Subsequently, Larlarb was employed as the costume designer for the series. In the costume department, her team maintained boards dedicated to footwear, belts, insignia, and closures. Larlarb and her team gained an understanding of what felt like Star Wars and what didn't after conducting research. She believed that they had a responsibility to the established culture while also needing to create something original because the series takes place between the prequels and the original trilogy. She put together reference boards of screenshots from the two trilogies, arranging them into groups based on various descriptors, to streamline the process. Larlarb and her team established the cultural, climate, and action requirements for each planet and scene featured in the series.

One of the initial costumes that Larlarb addressed was the Third Sister's costume, which was worn by actress Moses Ingram. Every component began as Larlarb's sketches, which were then passed to costume illustrator Darell Fuentes before receiving more detailed technical drawings. The workshop ensured that the costume pieces felt like a second skin for Ingram. Ingram's costume was predominantly black, so textural variations were used to break it up. Stacia Lang, an assistant costume designer and Larlarb's assistant, supervised the costume's construction. The costume influenced Ingram's posture, making her feel confident and powerful.

Larlarb was also responsible for the costume designs of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader. She aimed to ensure that Kenobi was recognizable to fans, but his costume also needed to reflect his status as a Jedi in hiding. To maintain the story's coherence, Kenobi needed to blend in with the other inhabitants of Tatooine by wearing clothing that was simply constructed and made from readily available colors. A "woady" blue top was incorporated to provide contrast with the shades of brown, beige, and cream typically associated with the Jedi. Larlarb also created the costumes for Kayo Organa, members of the Hidden Path, and Krystina Arielle, who made a cameo appearance as a partisan fighter. In July of 2022, her Kenobi and Vader costumes were showcased at the Lucasfilm Pavilion during San Diego Comic Con.
