Plot summary

Onward to Jabiim

The episode commences with a flashback showcasing Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Knight, engaging in lightsaber practice with his Padawan, Anakin Skywalker. Prior to their engagement, Kenobi inquires about Skywalker's readiness. In the narrative's present, an Imperial captain escorts Reva, known as the Third Sister, onto the bridge of the Imperial Star Destroyer Devastator. Vader, without preamble, presses Reva for Kenobi's location. Reva discloses that Kenobi has been tracked to Jabiim. Vader, satisfied, commands her to kneel before the bridge crew. Following her promotion to Grand Inquisitor, he instructs the captain to immediately chart a course for Jabiim.

Concurrently, Kawlan Roken's transport ship enters Jabiim's atmosphere and touches down at the Path's base. Roken, accompanied by Kenobi, Princess Leia Organa, Tala Durith, and Sully Stark, disembarks. Kenobi expresses surprise upon encountering Haja Estree, who explains his flight from Daiyu following a confrontation with the Third Sister. Consequently, the Galactic Empire placed a bounty on him, rendering him an outlaw akin to the Jedi. Haja hopes to find new business opportunities on Jabiim.

Kenobi communicates with Roken, emphasizing the need for Leia's return to Alderaan via the transport. Roken clarifies that the other inhabitants of the Path's base have been awaiting departure for several months. He further elaborates that their initial plan involved an ancient trade route, but the journey was postponed to facilitate Leia's rescue. Kenobi pledges his assistance, while Roken directs the fugitives to prepare for departure.

Sabotage

As Vader's Star Destroyer traverses hyperspace, he issues directives to secure the Path's base. Reva cautions that confining them might lead to a prolonged standoff. Vader counters that his intention is not to simply contain them. Meanwhile, the reprogrammed L0-LA59 ("Lola") infiltrates the base's power plant, manipulating its electrical systems to seal the hangar roof. Kenobi observes a message inscribed on the wall: "light will fade but is never forgotten."

With the hangar roof doors closing, Kenobi engages in a discussion with Tala, who suspects Reva's involvement in tracking them to Jabiim. Kenobi posits that Vader is spearheading the pursuit and intends to attack the Path's base directly, rather than initiating a siege. When Roken questions Kenobi's foresight, Kenobi recalls a duel with Skywalker during a training session. Skywalker's aggressive advance prompts Kenobi to remind him that the Jedi's purpose is to protect life, not to take it.

Skywalker disregards Kenobi's counsel, asserting that mercy is ineffective against an enemy. As their lightsabers clash, Skywalker declares that this is why he will lose. In the present, Vader's Star Destroyer deploys two starships to assault the Path's base. Kenobi addresses the apprehensive civilians, acknowledging their fear and apprehension. Recognizing their inability to confront the Empire directly, he proposes a strategy of delaying the Empire until the hangar roof can be reopened. Kenobi entrusts Roken and his fighters with the task of reopening the hangar roof within an hour and securing the other entrances.

The siege

As Imperial ships descend, the Path's defenders mobilize to seal the remaining entrances. The Imperial ships deploy a landing party consisting of stormtroopers and elite Purge Troopers, who encircle the facility. Several stormtroopers set up heavy weaponry. Reva arrives in a Scythe transport shuttle, joining the Imperial forces. She commands them to bombard the outer doors. Tala urges Roken to expedite the reopening of the hangar roof, but they encounter obstacles. Haja suggests that Roken and his men investigate the vents to identify the obstruction, but Roken is too large. Leia volunteers, with Kenobi cautioning her to exercise caution. He also instructs Haja to supervise her ascent.

Kenobi departs to listen to a message from Senator Bail Organa on his portable holoprojector. In private, Kenobi learns of Organa's concern due to the lack of communication. Organa expresses fear that Vader has located Kenobi or discovered the children, and threatens to travel to Tatooine to safeguard Owen Lars and Luke Skywalker if he does not hear from Kenobi soon. Following the transmission, Kenobi assures Tala that he will be alright. Tala confesses her involvement in an operation to gather four Force-sensitive families on [Garel](/article/garel] under the guise of tax evasion arrests. Tala was deeply affected by the deaths of 14 people including six children at the hands of the Inquisitors. Tala vows to atone for her actions by aiding in the defense against the Imperial besiegers.

With the outer doors weakening under pressure, Kenobi informs the defenders that he will stall for time by negotiating with the Third Sister. During a ceasefire, Reva warns the fugitive Jedi that his delaying tactics will not deter Vader's advance. Kenobi questions her knowledge of Vader's identity as Anakin, given her perceived youth at the time. Kenobi infers that Reva was a youngling who witnessed Skywalker's attack on the Jedi Temple on the night of Order 66. Reva is haunted by memories of Skywalker murdering her fellow youngling friends. She recounts her belief that Vader was there to help them, and her shock when he killed her Jedi "family." Reva reveals that she survived by feigning death.

Kenobi realizes that Reva intends to assassinate Vader and proposes an alliance. Reva is skeptical of Kenobi and questions his desire to kill Vader, pointing out that Kenobi was absent during the Temple attack to protect her and the other Jedi. Reva notes that Skywalker was Kenobi's Padawan and questions why he did not intervene when he had the opportunity. Reva rejects Kenobi's offer of assistance, believing in her solo triumph over her enemies. The Third Sister employs her lightsaber to breach the metal gate.

Defenses breached

The Third Sister commences the Imperial assault on Jabiim.

However, Kenobi uses the Force to repel her. A firefight erupts between Reva's stormtroopers and the Path's fighters. Reva commands her troops to storm the breach in the Path's facility. Path fighters, including Tala and the loader droid NED-B, engage the advancing Imperials. Kenobi also joins the fray with his lightsaber, striking down a Purge trooper. The Imperials, overwhelming in number, penetrate the Path's facility.

Meanwhile, Haja directs Leia to locate a red breaker. Tala and the Path fighters retreat further into the base, while Kenobi assists a wounded woman to safety. NED-B also confronts several stormtroopers, managing to hurl two aside. Tala is struck and collapses. Kenobi attempts to aid her, striking down several stormtroopers with his lightsaber. NED-B carries the wounded Tala to safety, shielding her from the stormtroopers' blaster fire. Tala urges Kenobi to retreat before activating a detonator. Kenobi, distraught, seals the inner blast door. Tala detonates herself, delaying the Imperial advance.

Kenobi and the surviving fighters retreat to the inner sanctum of the base, only to discover that Leia is still attempting to open the hangar roof. The Imperial captain informs Lord Vader that Reva has breached the inner sanctum. Vader instructs the Captain to order Reva to stand down, believing that Kenobi is within their grasp. In a flashback, Skywalker forces Kenobi to the edge of a balcony, demanding that his master concede defeat.

Parleying with Reva

Presuming their situation hopeless, Kenobi resolves to surrender to Lord Vader. Roken dissents, arguing that Tala's sacrifice would be in vain. Kenobi is resolved to halt Lord Vader's advance to safeguard the fugitives within. Kenobi entrusts Leia to Haja's care. Roken questions Kenobi's ability to confront Vader unarmed, to which Kenobi responds that there are alternative methods of combat. Kenobi exits the second blast door and surrenders to the Imperials, where he is apprehended by two stormtroopers. Other stormtroopers evacuate their wounded and fallen comrades.

While Leia searches through the cables and wires for the red breaker, Lola observes her menacingly. Kenobi is presented to a triumphant Reva, who orders her troops to notify Lord Vader of their capture. Reva informs Kenobi that Lord Vader is en route. Kenobi retorts that he is bringing him to her. He asks Reva if she will allow Lord Vader to slaughter more civilians, including children, and reiterates his offer to stop Vader again. When Reva asks if he won't see it coming, Kenobi replies that Vader will be too fixated on him.

Two stormtroopers escort Kenobi inside the base. Back in the flashback, Kenobi escapes the corner Skywalker has forced him into. The two resume their fight, but Skywalker manages to disarm Kenobi. Kenobi warns his Padawan that his desire for victory clouds his judgment. Back in the present, Vader arrives outside the Path fortress and meets with Reva, demanding Kenobi's whereabouts. She informs her master that Kenobi is inside, but Vader insists on apprehending Kenobi himself.

Escaping Vader

Meanwhile, Kenobi breaks free from his stormtrooper captors and flees deeper into the Path's facility. While searching for the red breaker, Leia is attacked by the reprogrammed Lola. Leia discovers a restraining bolt attached to Lola and removes it, freeing her from Imperial programming. Vader enters the base in pursuit of Kenobi, while Leia and Lola collaborate to open the roof doors. Sully leads the refugees aboard their ship, while Kenobi reunites with Leia. Leia learns of Tala's death.

As Leia and Kenobi proceed towards their transport, Vader forces his way into the hangar bay. He uses the Force to seize Roken's freighter, preventing its ascent and forcing it to the ground. He tears the ship apart, only to find it empty. The Path fighters and refugees escape on a second freighter, while Vader watches in fury. Back in the past, Kenobi breaks free of Skywalker in the sparring match and uses the Force to grab his Padawan's lightsaber. Kenobi tells Skywalker that he is a great warrior but that his need to prove himself is his undoing. Kenobi counsels Skywalker to overcome this desire in order to progress from being a Padawan.

Reva's gambit

Returning to the present, Reva attempts to stab Vader with her lightsaber, but he uses the Force to block her blade. Vader deduces that Kenobi cleverly used the Third Sister against him. He hurls Reva aside. Reva charges, but Vader casually deflects her lightsaber and throws her to the ground repeatedly. Reva activates her lightsaber's twin blade spinning mode, but Vader uses the Force to stall the blades rotation, and then rips her saber from her grip. Vader detaches her lightsaber into two single hilts, and tosses one on the ground at Reva's feet. Reva retrieves the weapon and continues to attack Vader, but the Sith Lord quickly disarms her again.

Reva is haunted by memories of Vader killing her fellow younglings. Lord Vader stabs Reva through the torso and she falls to her knees. The Grand Inquisitor then appears with several stormtroopers, revealing that he survived, wryly stating that revenge is a wonderful fuel for the will to live. Vader then chides Reva that he deduced her intent to betray him some time ago, but didn't act on it because her rage was a valuable tool in the hunt for Kenobi - now, however, the Third Sister is no longer of use to him. The pair then abandon Reva to die of her wounds, just as she left the Grand Inquisitor.

Trouble ahead

Aboard Roken's ship, Kenobi and Leia are among the refugees. Roken informs them that the ship's hyperdrive is malfunctioning and that the Empire is still in pursuit. Back on Jabiim, Reva reaches for her double-bladed spinning lightsaber and eyes Kenobi's holoprojector. Watching the holoprojector's hologram, Reva intercepts Organa's message and learns that Anakin Skywalker has a son on Tatooine. Kenobi realizes his holoprojector is missing but tells Roken that nothing is wrong. On Tatooine, the young Luke Skywalker sleeps in his bed at the Lars Homestead.
