Plot summary

The droid apprentice

The episode commences inside a brightly illuminated laboratory, where a bearded human man known as Professor Mitaka is conversing with a droid named T0-B1. Emerging from a stasis chamber, the droid inquires if Mitaka has enlarged him once more. Mitaka then instructs T0-B1 to retrieve another droid, C03, a task he promptly undertakes. He searches the premises for C03. After looking, he discovers the astromech droid C03 sketching on the walls and various objects, including an AT-AT walker. He then tells C03 that they can engage in lightsabers play afterwards.

Later on, Mitaka addresses T0-B1 alongside the other droids. He cautions T0-B1 that he has repeatedly forbidden him from entering the basement. T0-B1 offers an apology. Mitaka then instructs his droids, whom he affectionately refers to as his children, to commence their work. T0-B1 takes the lead. The droids assist Professor Mitaka in his laboratory endeavors. T0-B1 and C03 also contribute to calculations for Mitaka. Expressing boredom, T0-B1 inquires about the duration of his calculation tasks. Mitaka responds that the work must continue until the skies are filled with clouds and the land is adorned with greenery. He shares his aspirations of terraforming their planet into a beautiful haven.

When T0-B1 voices his yearning to explore the vastness of the galaxy, Mitaka assures him of their safety due to the prevailing peace. T0-B1 interjects, describing the galaxy as "terrifying and full of danger." Mitaka acknowledges that T0-B1 is now aware. T0-B1 responds by saying that he has said it a million times and adds that the Jedi are essential for ensuring the galaxy's safety. While occupied with calculations, T0-B1 envisions himself as a Jedi Knight, wielding a lightsaber and confronting Imperial walkers and Star Destroyers.

Subsequently, Mitaka interrupts his daydreaming. T0-B1 expresses his desire to become a Jedi Knight, traversing the galaxy and vanquishing evil. Mitaka clarifies that T0-B1 must embrace reality, encompassing both the distant future and the immediate present. He elaborates that the reality of being a Jedi is not as glamorous as T0-B1 perceives it to be. T0-B1 confides that he senses a calling, experiencing recurring dreams of becoming a great Jedi.

Search for the kyber crystal

Mitaka advises T0-B1 to seek out a kyber crystal. Another droid projects a hologram of a kyber crystal. Mitaka explains that such a crystal exists on their planet and serves as the core of a lightsaber, the weapon wielded by a Jedi Knight. He elaborates that Jedi tradition dictates that Padawans, the young Jedi apprentices, undertake the initial search for these crystals. If he truly aspires to become a Jedi, Mitaka must locate a crystal of his own.

The following morning, T0-B1, accompanied by C03, embarks on a speeder bike journey into the desert to discover his own crystal. Despite searching under rocks and digging holes, he remains unsuccessful. T0-B1 persists in his search through the Jedi. While riding his bike, T0-B1 contemplates the challenges of his quest. Upon returning home, Professor Mitaka encourages him to clear his mind and harness the Force, emphasizing that it is the source of the Jedi's power. When T0-B1 inquires about the Force's location, Mitaka explains that it permeates all things.

Tragedy

On the subsequent day, T0-B1 continues his search but remains unsure how to wield the Force. C03 communicates in Binary. T0-B1 responds that he has already searched every corner of the planet. T0-B1 then recalls Mitaka's warning against entering the basement. That night, the droids venture into the basement. C03 expresses apprehension, but T0-B1 counters that it is the only place he has yet to explore. T0-B1 peeks inside and discovers a skyhopper. The two climb aboard the ship, and T0-B1 broadcasts a message to all Jedi.

An Imperial Star Destroyer intercepts T0-B1's transmission. A stormtrooper informs an Inquisitor that they have detected a signal. The Inquisitor suspects it originates from a Jedi. Back on the planet, Mitaka discovers T0-B1 inside the skyhopper and urges him to exit. Mitaka employs the Force to force open the door and beckons T0-B1 to approach. He uses the Force to levitate a box. T0-B1 realizes that Mitaka is a Jedi and questions why he concealed this fact. Mitaka replies that he did so to protect him.

As a TIE/rp Reaper attack lander approaches the planet, Mitaka senses a disturbance in the Force, indicating the arrival of the Galactic Empire. He instructs T0-B1 to remain hidden and not to emerge for any reason. Mitaka uses the Force to levitate T0-B1, granting him an experience of the Force. T0-B1 implores the Professor not to deactivate him. He bestows his disassembled lightsaber upon T0-B1 and seals him behind a wall. Mitaka entrusts C03 with guarding T0-B1. And Mitaka's said his last words to T0-B1 before sealing the wall "I am one with the Force. The Force is with me."

Continuing Mitaka's dream

Subsequently, T0-B1 discovers that the Professor's home has been ravaged and that the other droids, excluding C03, have been destroyed. T0-B1 wonders about the Professor's whereabouts only to find that he has been killed and buried beneath a pile of rocks. Upon seeing Professor Mitaka's remaining plants, T0-B1 resolves to continue his mentor's terraforming research and realize the Professor's aspirations. Collaboratively, T0-B1 and C03 repair the other droids and reconstruct his laboratory. They dedicate themselves tirelessly over an extended period.

Through their collective endeavors, T0-B1 and the droids succeed in generating clouds and flora, which blankets the planet. The clouds bring rain, and T0-B1 recognizes that the Professor's dream has materialized. Via the Force, the deceased Mitaka instructs T0-B1 to harness the Force. He reassembles Mitaka's lightsaber using various components, including a kyber crystal that he discovers within his own body. The other droids cheer him as he celebrates his triumph. His victory is disrupted by the arrival of a TIE Advanced v1 fighter.

Fighting the Inquisitor

As the Inquisitor approaches, T0-B1 inquires with the other droids about the newcomer's identity. He realizes that it is the same Jedi killer responsible for Professor Mitaka's demise. The Inquisitor deduces that another Jedi is present on the planet and questions his origins. He inquires if Mitaka concealed him. T0-B1 draws his lightsaber in self-defense and engages the Inquisitor, who declares that he cannot permit him to become a threat.

During the battle, the Inquisitor employs the Force to raise earth, causing T0-B1 to stumble and fall. Professor Mitaka then reaches out to T0-B1 through the Force, urging him not to be afraid. He reassures his young Padawan T0-B1 that he is well-prepared for this encounter and expresses gratitude for restoring life to the planet. Mitaka is proud of T0-B1's growth and bestows upon him the title of Jedi Knight by the will of the Force. He wishes that the Force be with him.

Returning to the battle, T0-B1 resumes his combat with the Inquisitor. The two exchange parries with their blades. The Inquisitor hurls T0-B1 against several pipes. T0-B1 instructs the other droids to open a valve while he leads the Inquisitor on a chase. The Inquisitor destroys several machines with his lightsaber. T0-B1 activates the controls for a pump, triggering an explosion. The Inquisitor survives the blast and drags T0-B1 with the Force, severing his left arm. The Inquisitor expresses surprise that a droid is a Jedi.

T0-B1 responds that his name is "Tobi" before attacking the Inquisitor. The other droids attack the Inquisitor but he cuts some of them down. T0-B1 summons C03 before making a final attack on the Inquisitor. Following a duel, he slices off one of the Inquisitor's arms, killing him. The droids celebrate T0-B1's victory.

The Jedi path

"We'll continue our research, and the Professor's legacy of helping planets. Cause that's what Jedi do."

In the aftermath of the battle, T0-B1 and C03 depart the now verdant planet aboard Mitaka's skyhopper. T0-B1 intends to utilize the Professor's research to aid other planets, aligning with the Jedi's calling to assist others. The episode concludes with their ascent into space.
