"The Ninth Jedi" (in Japanese, it's written as: 九人目のジェダイ) is a short animated film, specifically an episode from the Star Wars: Visions television series, which debuted on Disney+ on September 22, 2021. Production IG, a Japanese animation studio located in Japan, created the film. Kenji Kamiyama both wrote and directed it.
A manga adaptation of the episode was created and released by Square Enix in Japan. It appeared in the Big Gangan magazine, specifically Vol.08, on July 25, 2022.
The narrator recounts that the light of the Jedi protected the galaxy for countless generations. Since then, an era of war has begun. Juro, the Margrave who governs the Outer Rim planet Hy Izlan, has initiated kyber crystal mining operations within his territory. His aim is to bring back the Jedi by recreating their lost lightsaber weapons. However, ancient dark forces are plotting to control the galaxy. Their scheme involves hunting down all Jedi, ushering in a new age of Sith dominance.
In space, a spaceship approaches a space station situated on an asteroid. Inside, six figures are gathered around a glowing portal. Ethan, a male human, walks down a dim corridor and into the main hall. He tells the assembled group that he arrived in response to an encrypted message summoning him. Ethan states that he senses a strong presence of the Force. He believes that the others are also Jedi without masters. The figures move closer to Ethan.
Roden, a brown-haired human man, informs Ethan that they all came because of the same summons. Ethan inquires about the authenticity of the invitation before playing his hologram. In the recording, Juro outlines his plans to revive the Jedi Order. He invites the potential Jedi to the Aerial Temple, where he promises to give them a lightsaber. He encourages them to join his cause to unite the war-torn galaxy and re-establish peace.
Hanbei, a blue tentacled alien, challenges Margrave Juro's claim of recreating lightsabers but verifies the presence of kyber crystals on the planet Hy Izlan below. Hen Jin, an orange masked figure, acknowledges the rumors of kyber crystals on the planet but questions Juro's trustworthiness. Observing the cloaked and masked figure of Juro, Ethan agrees with Hen Jin's point and wonders if Juro is a Jedi Master or if he is setting a trap for them. The brown-haired man then asks if anyone present has previously encountered Juro.

Niizo, a hooded female, asks them to consider the dangers of traveling there to acquire a lightsaber and become a Jedi. She removes her hood, revealing a purple-skinned humanoid with light hair. Homen, a canine male, questions whether their connection to the Force is strong enough to protect themselves. Toguro, a masked figure wearing a red cloak, declares that he senses a powerful dark side presence.
Suddenly, they hear laughter as a massive Steward Droid enters the chamber to greet the seven Jedi hopefuls. The droid admits that the Margrave's appearance often frightens people. He assures them that Juro is simply an eccentric old man who avoids being confined to castles. Although Juro has not yet revealed himself, the droid affirms that Juro is willing to meet them and will arrive shortly. The seven candidates gather around the droid.
On the planet's surface, several pulley systems are used to extract kyber crystals from orbit. Lah Kara and her floating droid, 99-99, known as "Four-Nines," are riding a speeder bike. Inside a workshop, her father, Lah Zhima, a blacksmith, is busy assembling a lightsaber. Kara informs Zhima that they found a large crystal that day and asks if he has finished making the seven lightsabers. Zhima confirms that he has. He allows Kara to test a lightsaber. Zhima explains to his daughter that he has attuned each lightsaber crystal to respond to the user's connection to the Force, but the color and length will vary depending on the Jedi using it.
Kara observes that her connection to the Force is not strong enough, as her blade only has a dark tint. Zhima reassures her that she possesses some natural talent with a lightsaber and that her connection will strengthen with time. He explains that the Force exists in all living beings, and only those who cultivate their connection to it will have the ability to wield it. Zhima advises his daughter not to be concerned yet. Kara agrees and asks what color the lightsaber will become when held by a true Jedi. She practices with the lightsaber, while Zhima is satisfied that he completed the lightsabers on time.
Just then, Four-Nines detects the silhouette of a passing starship. Kara asks if it is one of the Jedi starships. Zhima replies that it cannot be, since the Jedi were summoned to the Aerial Temple. The starship lands on the platform and releases several armored, masked Jedi hunters. Zhima hands Kara the lightsabers wrapped in cloth and instructs her to take them to the Aerial Temple immediately. He tells her that he must deal with the visitors. Zhima tells Kara that she has grown up. Kara senses that this may be their last encounter. Before she departs, Zhima invokes the Force to be with her.
The masked hunters force their way into the workshop and demand to know if the blacksmith is Lah Zhima. After Zhima confirms his identity, the bandits accuse him of illegally manufacturing lightsabers for masterless Jedi. Zhima asks where they obtained this information. The bandits respond that they received it from the person who hired him to make them. Their leader orders Zhima to surrender the lightsabers, but he refuses. As Kara speeds away, one of the hunters fires his blaster at her, but Zhima deflects the blast with his hand into the furnace, causing it to explode. Kara witnesses the explosion and calls out to her father. Zhima urges her to leave before a hunter knocks him unconscious. The leader sends his subordinates after her.
Back at the Aerial Temple, Roden demands proof of Margrave's plan from the Sentinel droid. Handai questions whether the Margrave actually created any lightsabers. The droid presents them with a case containing a lightsaber and asks if this is what they seek. The Jedi candidates are amazed. Ethan asks to hold it, explaining that lightsabers had already disappeared from the galaxy by the time he was born. Ethan activates the lightsaber, which emits a blue blade. He is impressed by the weapon.
The Sentinel droid states that the remaining sabers should arrive soon. Meanwhile, the second hunter chases Kara through a snowy forest, firing his blaster at her. Kara and Four-Nines dodge fallen branches. During the pursuit, Kara turns her speeder around and drives it backward while deflecting the hunter's blaster shots with one of the lightsabers. The hunter senses that the Force is strong with the girl. Kara rides her speeder bike over a frozen lake and then dismounts. She stands her ground and damages the hunter's bike, causing him to fall off. She then gets back on her bike with Four-Nines. The hunter survives and raises his pistol.
Kara arrives at the spaceport where she encounters a Boatman droid who is drinking hot oil from tea cups. She begs him to take her to the Aerial Temple immediately. The droid says that he is on his break and tells her to find another pilot. Kara points out that he is the only one working and gives him a coin. The Boatman droid reluctantly agrees to transport Kara and Four-Nines to the Aerial Temple.
Meanwhile, at the asteroid space station, the impatient Jedi candidates confront the Sentinel droid, expressing their frustration at waiting for the lightsabers. The grey female humanoid says she senses something approaching. The Boatman droid transports Kara and Four-Nines to the orbiting Aerial Temple. He drops her off at the hangar where she is greeted by the Jedi candidates. Ethan asks Kara who she is. Kara introduces herself as the daughter of the sabersmith Lah Zhima. Roden deduces that she is the one with the lightsabers. Presenting the lightsabers to the Jedi candidates, Kara tells them that her father was captured by the Jedi hunters and asks for their help.
Kara asks where the Margrave is, prompting Ethan to ask if she knows Juro. Kara explains that she has known Juro since she was a baby. The other candidates give her dark looks. Hanbei asks if she knows his location. Roden says something feels wrong and that they will have to wait for the Margrave to arrive. Ethan, Kara, and Four-Nines find themselves surrounded by the other six candidates, who activate their lightsabers, which glow red. Kara and Ethan realize that the others are Sith.
The Sentinel droid observes the situation and reveals that he is Margrave Juro, and has been hiding inside the droid. The Margrave announces that he has been present the entire time. Roden mocks Juro for disguising himself as a droid to spy on them. Hanbei declares that they are acolytes of the Sith, sworn to the dark side, and vow to thwart Juro's plan to restore the Jedi Order. Hanbei lunges at Juro with his lightsaber, but Juro uses the Force to easily snatch the lightsaber from his hand, where it turns green. He then swiftly kills Hanbei, cutting him in half, shocking his fellow Sith.
Roden and a second Sith engage Juro in combat. Hen Jin tells Kara that their hunters have taken her father to a distant star system, ensuring she will never see him again. Ethan and Kara draw their lightsabers. Kara, in a panic, accidentally strikes Ethan's saber, knocking him down. She then fights against three of the Sith, later joined by Ethan. Meanwhile, Juro battles Roden and kills Toguro, frustrating Roden. Niizo calls out to Roden and attempts to assist him. Juro effortlessly kills Hen Jin and fatally wounds Niizo.
Roden tends to the dying Niizo, who passes away in his arms. Meanwhile, Kara parries Homen, whose lightsaber turns purple, while hers becomes pure green. The enraged Roden attacks Juro with Force lightning. Juro attempts to deflect it with the Force, but the Sith's Force lightning breaks through his defenses. Kara rushes to help Juro while Ethan takes over her fight with Homen. Kara duels with Roden. Juro uses the Force to push Roden onto a giant kyber crystal, causing him to disintegrate and burn to death.
Juro stops Ethan and Homen from fighting. He appeals to Homen, reminding him that they all know he is not a Sith. Homen apologizes, admitting that he was consumed by the others' darkness, and deactivates his blade. Juro apologizes to Kara, explaining that he recently learned that several Jedi who answered his call were killed and replaced by Sith. Juro explains that he concealed his presence to determine who was Sith. As a result, they also learned about her father, Zhima. Juro apologizes for not being able to help her father.
Juro promises Kara that he will help rescue her father. Ethan expresses regret for not being strong enough to defeat the Sith. Juro reassures Ethan that he survived the fight. When Ethan asks about the other Jedi, Juro says that he senses them elsewhere in the galaxy. Juro tells Kara that she has been guided by the Force since birth. He invites her to join them as the ninth Jedi in the group working to restore peace to the galaxy so they can re-establish the Jedi Order. The group departs on a starship and heads into space, leaving the Aerial Temple behind.
