Plot summary

Returning to Yavin 4

Ulic Qel-Droma, Exar Kun, and Mandalore make their way back to Yavin 4 after the events that transpired on Coruscant. Mandalore informs Ulic that Aleema Keto had committed an act of betrayal against him. Having grown tired of Aleema's schemes, he pledges to confront the traitor. When Aleema makes her appearance, he conceals his true sentiments and bestows upon her the "honor" of spearheading the next assault.

Assault on Ambria

In a parallel narrative, Jedi Knight Nomi Sunrider, accompanied by her young daughter Vima Sunrider and fellow Knight Sylvar, journey to the planet Ambria to seek solace and training from her former Jedi Master Thon. However, they find themselves pursued by Kun's apprentice Crado and Oss Wilum, who is under the influence of the Sith. Wilum conjures forth several dark side Hssiss to unleash an attack upon the Jedi, including Master Thon and Sylvar.

Nevertheless, the Jedi retaliate, with Nomi employing her battle meditation prowess to divert and ultimately vanquish the dark side entities. Thon and Sylvar also succeed in eliminating a number of the creatures. Thon manages to subdue Wilum, while an incensed Sylvar confronts Crado for his act of treachery, leaving a scar upon his face. Crado manages to flee off-world, while Nomi and Sylvar provide assistance to Wilum. Master Thon expresses his apprehension that he was the intended target of a Jedi student aiming to assassinate his own master, and he voices his hope that the other Masters remain unharmed.

Jedi bloodbath

Across the galaxy, the corrupted Jedi students of Exar Kun commit acts of murder against their respective masters. In one such instance, Zona Luka inflicts a fatal wound upon her Master Dominus during a lightsaber duel, but the mortally wounded Dominus manages to kill her as well.

Subsequently, the Jedi Knights Qrrrl Toq, Dace Diath, and Shoaneb Culu come across the deceased Luka and the robes of her Master Dominus, who has become one with the Force. Shoaneb comes to the realization that the killings of Jedi Masters were the underlying cause of the profound disturbance that she had sensed through the Force. The three Jedi deduce that Ulic Qel-Droma and Exar Kun are orchestrating wars against the Jedi through both military might and the malevolent application of the Force.

Purging the ranks

Following his unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Master Thon, Crado succeeds in convincing Exar Kun to grant him a second opportunity by accompanying Aleema in an assault on Kemplex Nine with the intention of drawing away the Republic fleet. Within the control room of Naga Sadow's warship, the Corsair, Exar Kun provides Aleema and Crado with instructions on how to utilize crystals to extract fire from the stars.

Mandalore the Indomitable expresses his discontentment that Ulic has not afforded him the opportunity to lead the mission, but Ulic reassures him that he is aware that Aleema is a traitor who will ultimately play into their schemes. Ulic also regards Crado as a weak and unreliable asset. Before Aleema and Crado embark on their assault, Ulic and Exar Kun inform them that they will attain glory and victory, while simultaneously concealing the true objective of their mission.

The Sith offensive

While the Jedi convene to deliberate on the deaths of eight Jedi Masters at the Great Jedi Library of Ossus, Tott Doneeta informs them that the nearby spaceport city of Kemplex Nine is under attack by an ancient Sith warship. Master Thon expresses his concern that this assault is a diversionary tactic and that the Sith's actual target is Ossus. Dace, Shaoaneb, and Qrrrl Toq consent to lead the counter-attack.

Upon arriving at Kemplex Nine, the Jedi discover that Aleema has eradicated all life on the station. However, the Jedi and their Republic allies detect the presence of the Sith battleship concealed nearby within the Cron Cluster. As the Jedi fighters and Republic warships draw near, Aleema employs the Sith battleship's crystals to extract the core from the center of one of the ten stars within the Cron Cluster. She then hurls the flaming, radioactive core into the midst of the Jedi pursuers, resulting in their incineration.

While Aleema and Crado initially experience a sense of triumph, they soon come to the realization that Aleema's maneuver has triggered a chain reaction that ultimately leads to the destruction of the remaining nine stars. Both Aleema and Crado meet their demise. The resulting supernovae also unleash a wave of devastation that poses a threat to several nearby worlds, including Ossus.

The destruction of the Cron cluster not only eliminates Aleema and Crado but also leaves Ossus undefended. Ulic and Exar Kun proceed to Ossus with the intention of plundering its Great Library for its invaluable secrets.
