The Clone Wars: Hunting the Hunters (Part II)

The Clone Wars: Hunting the Hunters (Part II), an 8-page webcomic from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars webcomic series, saw its debut on July 16, 2009. Set following the events of Season One of The Clone Wars television series, this installment, Hunting the Hunters (Part II), was penned by Pablo Hidalgo, brought to life through the illustrations of Katie Cook, and given its lettering by Grant Gould. As a continuation in the Hunting the Hunters narrative, Hunting the Hunters Part II portrays Jedi Master Kit Fisto in combat against a rebellious droid force, commanded by the mercenary Robonino, on the planet of Rodia. The first seven pages of this webcomic also act as a lead-in to the online game Swamp Station Sweep available on StarWars.com, which extends the conflict between the battle droid army and the clone troopers under Fisto's command. Successfully completing Swamp Station Sweep unlocks the comic's eighth and final page, where Fisto apprehends Robonino.

Plot summary

The story initiates with a Republic LAAT/i gunship as it nears a dilapidated station situated within the swamps of Rodia, a planet. Rodian Senator Onaconda Farr is aboard the gunship, briefing Jedi Master and General Kit Fisto of the Republic army about the developing situation on Rodia. Senator Farr explains to Fisto that he reached out to the Republic for assistance because Rodian scouts had reported seeing Confederate battle droids at the long-abandoned station, leading Master Fisto to speculate that these droids could be remnants from the Confederacy's recent unsuccessful invasion of Rodia. As the gunship makes its landing near the station, Farr informs Fisto that whatever force occupies the area is also responsible for the deaths of local wildlife. Fisto, along with several specialized clone SCUBA troopers, exits the aircraft while Farr remains onboard. The Jedi Master reassures the Senator that he intends to locate and neutralize this emerging threat.

Fisto and his team of clone troopers plunge into the swamp water to scout for any signs of the enemy. Simultaneously, B1-Series battle droid sentries detect the Republic soldiers and begin to engage in combat. Meanwhile, Fisto discovers a peculiar mechanical contraption integrated into the station's foundation, even as his troopers eliminate the enemy battle droids. One of Fisto's clones points out to the squad's clone commander that the droids seem to have been modified by someone. As Fisto examines the strange device, an unseen attacker opens fire, resulting in the deaths of two of the General's clone troopers.

Robonino tries to escape from Kit Fisto.

The assailant, the Patrolian bounty hunter Robonino, attempts to flee from Master Fisto by swimming away from the device. Fisto gives chase to the mercenary, but Robonino returns fire at the Jedi with his blaster pistol. When Fisto uses his lightsaber to deflect the laser blasts, Robonino responds by hurling several thermal detonators at the Jedi. General Fisto skillfully uses the Force to redirect the detonators toward the underwater device, but the resulting explosion allows Robonino to escape. Fisto resurfaces to find the clone commander informing him that the enemy battle droids have been deactivated because the device—a droid controller—was destroyed. Fisto acknowledges the good news but expresses his disappointment at failing to capture the one responsible for the destruction.

With the station now secure, Fisto proceeds to brief Senator Farr on the situation. The general tells Farr that the environmental damage at the station was not caused by Separatists, but by the fugitive bounty hunter. Robonino's reactivation of the Confederate battle droids and construction of the droid controller at the station's base inadvertently caused the surrounding wildlife's suffering. Farr is taken aback by this revelation, just as a native Kwazel Maw sea creature emerges from the swamp, spitting out a dazed but unharmed Robonino. As the clone troopers take the bounty hunter into custody, Fisto remarks that kindness to nature is often repaid in kind.

Conception

The Clone Wars: Hunting the Hunters (Part II) stands as an eight-page webcomic and holds the position of the twenty-third installment within The Clone Wars webcomic series. As a component of the broader Hunting the Hunters story arc, its events unfold subsequent to the first season of The Clone Wars television series. The Hunting the Hunters arc delves into the continuing saga of various members of Cad Bane's bounty hunter group, who were involved in the raid on the Republic Executive Building during the Season One finale of The Clone Wars, titled "Hostage Crisis".

Notably, the initial seven pages of Hunting the Hunters (Part II) serve a dual purpose by acting as a prelude to the online video game, Swamp Station Sweep. This game was launched on Star Wars.com concurrently with the webcomic. Within the game's narrative, players assume the role of a clone trooper under General Fisto's command, tasked with repelling Robonino's droid forces. Successfully navigating and defeating all three waves of battle droids within the game unlocks access to the concluding bonus page of Hunting the Hunters (Part II).
