The concluding episode of the animated anthology series Star Wars: Tales of the Empire is "The Way Out," which is the sixth episode. It was released on May 4 of 2024.
The episode starts with a snowy landscape. A creature with four legs scurries across the screen. A child's parents are traveling through the blizzard with their animal carrying their belongings. They come across a short Mohsenian in the middle of the storm. The father asks the Mohsenian for directions to the "healer." The mother is holding a small child. The Mohsenian agrees to guide the couple.
After the blizzard subsides, the group arrives at a small dwelling. A woman wearing a fur coat invites them inside to see the healer. The healer is revealed to be Barriss Offee, who was once a Jedi Padawan and later an Inquisitor. She asks to examine the child. After touching the child's head, she says that the child appears to be healthy. The parents confirm this, explaining to Offee that the Galactic Empire visited their village and took blood samples from the children. They tell Offee that the Empire was afraid of their child and wanted to take him, which caused them to run away. They also mention that the Mohsenian they encountered told them to seek her out.
Offee invites the couple to sit down and recounts a similar experience her own family had, where the Jedi took her in and trained her. She speaks of seeing incredible things and traveling among the stars with her Master, Luminara Unduli, before she was consumed by a darkness. Offee stresses that this happened a long time ago. When the mother inquires if their child is a Jedi, Offee clarifies that in the Jedi's time, the child would have been considered to have the potential to become one. She adds that such gifts are a liability under the Empire's rule. Offee affirms that the parents were correct to flee, as the Empire would exploit or do something worse to the child.
Suddenly, a gust of wind blows into the hut, extinguishing the candles. The Mohsenian warns Offee that someone is approaching. The father goes outside with Offee. Offee spots a figure in the distance. She instructs the Mohsenian to take the family to safety on her starship. Despite the Mohsenian's offer to help, Offee insists that he take the family to an "old friend," using the coordinates stored in her ship's navigation computer. The other attendant offers to return and assist, but Offee tells both attendants that they have already done more than enough. She asks them to pass on everything she has taught them. When the parents ask how they can thank her, Offee tells them to escape on her starship.
After everyone else departs, Offee confronts the stranger, who is revealed to be the Fourth Sister, formerly known as Lyn Rakish, a former Jedi. The Fourth Sister expresses her surprise and pleasure at finding Offee. When Offee demands that she leave, the Fourth Sister reveals that she was sent to retrieve the child, Micah. Offee stands her ground. The Fourth Sister advances with her double-bladed spinning lightsaber, using only one blade. When Offee accuses her of abducting innocent children for the Empire, the Fourth Sister calls her a traitor, claiming that Offee wouldn't understand.
The Fourth Sister becomes enraged when Offee calls her by her former name. Offee evades the Inquisitor's lightsaber, prompting her to ignite the second blade. Offee continues to avoid the Fourth Sister's attacks. When Offee mocks her for being predictable due to her anger, the Inquisitor activates her lightsaber's spinning mode and launches another attack. Offee uses the Force to disable the weapon, causing the Fourth Sister to drop it. The Fourth Sister realizes that Offee is stalling her so that her attendants can escape with the family. Offee warns her not to pursue the child into the cave, as she doesn't know the path.
The Fourth Sister retorts that fear is her ally, leading Offee to comment on her poor choice of allies. Ignoring Offee, the Fourth Sister charges into the cave, promising to eliminate her after capturing the child. The attendants guide the family and their child through the tunnels inside the cave. The Fourth Sister follows but becomes disoriented by the ice formations that create reflections. The attendants, who know the way, successfully lead the family to their starship. The Inquisitor gets lost in the cave, while the family and attendants safely board their starship and jump into hyperspace.
Back inside the cave, the Fourth Sister slashes at the ice formations in an attempt to find her way out. Offee reminds her that she warned her. When the Fourth Sister accuses her of deceiving her, Offee replies that she doesn't want her to die there. Offee urges her to drop her weapon and offers to show her the way out. The Fourth Sister expresses her fear of the consequences of her failure. When Offee points out that fear is not her ally, the Inquisitor continues to slash at the ice formations in a fit of anger. She accidentally stabs Offee with her lightsaber.
The Fourth Sister is horrified by her actions and apologizes. Offee dismisses her apology and tells Lyn that she knows the way out, which requires abandoning fear and her Imperial identity. Making peace with Offee, Lyn carries her and promises to get them out of the cave. She leaves her double-bladed spinning lightsaber behind. Outside the ice cave, a rodent observes Lyn carrying Offee out of the cave.
