Theed power generator

The Theed power generator, a plasma power facility, was connected to both the Hangar and the Royal Palace in Theed, the capital city of Naboo. During the Battle of Naboo, within this power generator, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, engaged in a duel against the Sith Lord Darth Maul. This confrontation led to Jinn's death and Maul's apparent end.

Description

Situated adjacent to the Theed Hangar within the Theed Royal Palace complex, and nearby the Virdugo Plunge, the power generation facility supplied energy to the city. Underground conduits were used to transmit plasma energy to starships in the Hangar, including the Naboo Royal Starship and the N-1 starfighters belonging to the Naboo Royal Space Fighter Corps. A small team of trained personnel from the Plasma Energy Engineering unit of the Royal Naboo Security Forces staffed the building, which was guarded by Security Guards. Access from the Hangar was possible via a robust blast door.

Power plant

To facilitate the operation and monitoring of the generator while avoiding exposure to hazardous plasma energies, the Energy Engineering staff had access to a remote engineering console and an inspection platform. This platform was located on the edge of the main extraction shaft, near the access door. Vacuum suction was used to extract plasma from the planet's core, which was then forced through twelve acceleration shafts to amplify its energy output before it reached the processing unit. A substantial plasma activator served to stabilize the unrefined plasma. The final product was then injected into twin plasma compressors for use by the Theed power grid. To ensure the refined plasma's quality, a series of plasma equilibrium checkpoints were in place before it was used by the grid transformers.

Any excess plasma resulting from the stabilization process was diverted to a large reserve tank, shielded with multilayered radiation dampers. Six laser doors protected the tank's entrance, and a large re-circulation lid periodically removed oxygen from the tank to maintain the delicate vacuum equilibrium inside.

History

Background

For many centuries, the people of Naboo relied on small mines to power their [capital](/article/capital]. However, the discovery of a large plasma source beneath the Cliffs of Theed prompted the construction of a more efficient plasma mining and refining facility. The goal was to provide a permanent solution to the city's energy needs.

Construction

Outer Rim Construction and Assembly built the power generator complex in 65 BBY as a joint project between Naboo and Damask Holdings. The final design incorporated various culturally significant details for the Naboo. One such detail was the six laser gates shielding the plasma reserve tank, a reference to the ancient legend of Chaos being held back by six impenetrable doors. Senator Sheev Palpatine, Naboo's Senatorial representative, attended the opening ceremony. His interest in the deep-pit design was particularly noted.

Use by the Naboo

The complex was a resounding success, exceeding the capital's energy requirements. The excess plasma in the generator's reserve tank was kept for emergencies or increased spaceship usage. By approximately 32 BBY, the Naboo had started selling the excess plasma in off-world trade deals arranged through the Trade Federation.

During the Battle of Naboo, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi engaged in a duel with Darth Maul inside the power generator. Qui-Gon met his end, but Obi-Wan triumphed over Maul, bisecting him. The Sith Lord plunged into a melting pit, but he survived and eventually found his way to Lotho Minor.

Behind the scenes

In Star Wars Battlefront II, the power generator's location is mirrored. Rather than being accessible on the hangar's left side (when facing forward), it is accessible on the right side.

In LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Maul destroys the platforms, and the laser gates do not activate and deactivate in the correct sequence.
