Training clicker

A device for creature training, known as a training clicker, was employed for the purpose of training various creatures. SF-R3, a Safari droid, at one point attempted to use this device to train porgs, but with only marginal success.

Description

The training clicker was a compact, handheld instrument, primarily colored orange and gray. It featured buttons that, when activated, generated a clicking sound. The intention behind this clicking sound was to facilitate the training of creatures, although it proved ineffective on porgs, a species of non-sentient avian creatures.

History

Asteroid field

Around or after 34 ABY, the Safari droid designated SF-R3 and the cam droid identified as CAM possessed a training clicker, which they kept on their vessel. The Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts, an organization dedicated to the study of diverse species throughout the galaxy, dispatched the two droids to an asteroid field with the aim of learning how to locate mynocks, a species of silicon-based, bat-resembling parasites. After enticing a mynock from its hiding place using batteries, a larger number of mynocks attempted to drain the droids' energy, prompting their swift return to their ship. Upon returning, they discovered a mynock infestation, with SF-R3's power significantly depleted. SF-R3 then initiated a low-power mode and struggled to open the airlock, which resulted in the release of the droids, mynocks, a training clicker, and other items into space. CAM retrieved SF-R3 and sealed the airlock, but all of the ship's loose items remained in the void.

Batuu

Subsequently, the Society sent SF-R3 and CAM to the Batuu Wilds on the planet Batuu in the Outer Rim Territories to determine if porgs could be taught new behaviors. SF-R3 carried a training clicker within his chest compartment, retrieving it upon encountering a small group of porgs. SF-R3 activated the clicker, producing the clicking sound, and instructed the porgs to sit. Receiving no response, he repeated the action. SF-R3 then physically pushed a porg down to force it into a sitting position while simultaneously using the training clicker. This action resulted in the porg being launched a considerable distance.

Later, SF-R3 activated the training clicker and instructed a trio of porgs to spin. SF-R3 demonstrated the spinning action, but the birds remained unresponsive. SF-R3 then physically spun one of the porgs, causing it to become dizzy, leading him to conclude that a more basic approach was necessary.

SF-R3 and the porgs then relocated to a cave which, unbeknownst to them, was inhabited by a Batuuan braga bear. SF-R3 used the clicker and instructed the porgs to wave, demonstrating the action. One of the porgs attempted to wave, but ended up flying erratically. SF-R3 then used the clicker and pretended to die and fall to the ground, instructing the porgs to mimic his actions. The porgs promptly flew away from an approaching Batuuan braga bear, and SF-R3 quickly followed.

Behind the scenes

The initial visual representation of training clickers occurred in the trailer for the Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures webseries. The debut appearance of training clickers was in "Porgs," the inaugural episode of the aforementioned webseries, which premiered on StarWarsKids.com on October 14, 2021.
