Around 27 BBY, in the Unknown Regions, Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo (whose core name was "Thrawn") of the Chiss Ascendancy engaged in his initial battle against the Vagaari pirates. This confrontation, which marked the beginning of Thrawn's operations aimed at eradicating the pirate threat, saw Thrawn seize a Vagaari gravity-well generator. The Chiss Obbic family was subsequently convinced to form an alliance with the senior captain's Mitth family due to the generator's acquisition. In 18 BBY, Captain Clarr'os'culry of the Clarr family reminded Patriarch Rivlex of the Clarr family that the Obbic's allegiance with the Mitth was a direct result of that specific conflict.
The 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good, the second book of Timothy Zahn's Ascendancy Trilogy, first introduced the encounter between Thrawn and the Vagaari into current Star Wars canon. Within the Star Wars Legends timeline, Zahn's 2006 novel Outbound Flight featured the battle of the Geroon homeworld, during which Force Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo absconded with a Vagaari gravity well projector.
