Unidentified three-engined Mon Calamari cruiser

This cruiser represented a class of starship originating from Mon Calamari, seeing action during the Imperial Era. Functioning as a component of the Alliance to Restore the Republic's naval forces, it incorporated a trio of engine units along with a pair of wings.

Description

The bow of the cruiser

These Star Cruisers, whose design was based on Mon Calamari technology, were utilized by the Mon Calamari people of the planet Mon Cala. A hyperdrive was included in its equipment, alongside three engines arranged in a triangular shape at the rear. Furthermore, these vessels featured two wings, one on the port side and one on the starboard side, which connected the primary hull with two large capsules. Consistent with all Mon Calamari ships, this class displayed rounded hulls, and the bow had a rounded and pointed shape.

History

Mutiny on Mon Cala

At least one cruiser of this class was above Mon Cala during the mutiny

During the Galactic Empire's reign, this Mon Calamari cruiser served within the Mon Cala Mercantile Fleet of the Mon Calamari monarchy. After Imperial forces occupied Mon Cala, they seized control of the fleet, renaming it the Mon Cala Imperial Trade Fleet. By the time of the Galactic Civil War between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance, these cruisers were part of the trade fleet.

When a rebel team spearheaded by Princess Leia Organa of the Rebel Alliance failed to convince Grand Admiral Dors Urtya of the trade fleet to mutiny against the Empire, they succeeded in recording the final words of King Lee-Char of Mon Cala from prison before he was killed by Imperial stormtroopers. Urtya initially took possession of the recording but ultimately chose to distribute it to all Fleet Captains within the trading fleet, prompting their Mon Calamari crews to revolt. During this revolt, multiple ships were positioned above Mon Cala, including one of this specific Mon Calamari cruiser class.

The trade fleet soon faced an Imperial blockade under the command of Admiral Tyrus Meori, but Admiral Gial Ackbar led Rebel Alliance forces to reinforce the Mon Calamari starships. After the Aurora Flare broke the blockade by sacrificing itself and destroying the Imperial flagship, the Mon Cala and Rebel Alliance starships jumped to hyperspace and retreated. Months later, numerous Mon Calamari cruisers of this type were present at the Rebel Alliance Mako-Ta Space Docks, where they, along with other Mon Calamari starships, underwent refitting with Shu-Torun systems and were integrated into the Rebel Alliance Navy.

Assault on the Mako-Ta Space Docks

A cruiser damaged during the attack on Mako-Ta Space Docks

The Shu-Torun systems had been sabotaged, as they were supplied by Queen Trios of Shu-Torun, an agent working for the Sith Lord Darth Vader. When Vader's Imperial Death Squadron arrived and attacked Mako-Ta Space Docks, the Alliance Fleet was caught off guard and unprepared. The Imperial fleet targeted various Mon Calamari ships, including these Mon Calamari cruisers. From the hangar of the MC80A Home One Type Heavy Star Cruiser Republic (republic_(mc80a_home_one_type_heavy_star_cruiser)), Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles witnessed the destruction of a ship of this class.

Eventually, rebel forces discovered that the hangar doors on their vessels would open upon detecting a rebel transponder. After Luke Skywalker and the newly formed Rogue Squadron successfully launched from the Republic, they demonstrated the fleet's ability to launch starfighters. During the battle, Leia Organa led a team to infiltrate the Executor and acquire the codes needed to override the Shu-Torun systems. Ultimately, the Republic overcame the sabotage, escaped the battle, and returned to transfer the codes to all surviving rebel starships, enabling the survivors, including several ships of this class, to escape.

Behind the scenes

This Mon Calamari cruiser made its debut, without being named, in the 2018 canon comic Star Wars (2015) 49, written by Kieron Gillen and illustrated by Salvador Larroca.
