The Mutiny on Mon Cala represents an uprising. In it, the Mon Calamari people revolted against the Galactic Empire's control over their home. During 1 ABY, the Alliance to Restore the Republic dispatched Leia Organa together with the Heroes of Yavin to Mon Cala. Their mission: enlist the Mon Cala Mercantile Fleet in their cause. Achieving this goal, the fleet then had to confront an Imperial Blockade to successfully flee Mon Cala.
Following an Imperial invasion, which occurred during the early reign of the Galactic Empire, the water planet of Mon Cala was subjected to Imperial occupation. Sometime after the Battle of Yavin, a group consisting of Han Solo, Leia Organa, Gial Ackbar, Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 journeyed to a Mon Cala atoll. Their purpose was to confer with Regent Dors Urtya, the Grand Admiral in charge of the Mon Cala Mercantile Fleet. Discussions revolved around getting the fleet to join the Rebellion and instigating a revolt against the Imperial presence. However, a squad of stormtroopers in a LAAT/le patrol gunship disrupted the talks by destroying Urtya's vessel. Han Solo killed a significant number of them using a thermal detonator, but the remaining troops chased the rebels into a nearby jungle. Fortunately, the Rebels managed to get away by boat.
Urtya, concerned about the potential repercussions for his people, chose not to provide the Rebellion with the fleet's assistance in their war against the Empire. The rebels, disappointed, went back to the Mako-Ta Space Docks to give a report to Mon Mothma and Jan Dodonna. Leia Organa, determined to secure the Mon Calamari fleet, suggested to Alliance High Command that they rescue the imprisoned King Lee-Char from the Imperial base located on Strokill Prime. Following some deliberation, the plan received approval. Rebel forces then proceeded to the Dex Acquisitions Depot prison on Meor Ain to liberate Tunga Arpagion, a Clawdite shapeshifter, to aid their mission.
Upon their return to Mon Cala, Rebel operatives infiltrated the Moncaladrome opera house. Luke Skywalker was disguised as a stormtrooper, C-3PO and R2-D2 acted as caterers, and Han played the role of an attendant. R2-D2 provided Moff Tan Hubi with an accelerator, his preferred drink, and waited for him to visit the refresher. Once he did, Han Solo and Chewbacca abducted the Moff and replaced him with Tunga Arpagion, who perfectly mimicked the Moff's appearance.
Leia Organa, accompanied by a small team, transported the actual Hubi to the base on Strokill Prime. She utilized codes obtained from Queen Trios of Shu-Torun, along with Hubi's biosignature, to circumvent the base's security measures. After eluding a massive fish, the Rebel team successfully gained entry to the prison. They located King Lee-Char, finding him in a weakened state, connected to a life support system. Subsequently, Moff Hubi managed to contact Imperial Forces and reveal his kidnapping, as well as the impersonation.
Back at the Moncaladrome, stormtroopers opened fire on the fake Moff, but the Rebel forces managed to escape. In the prison on Strokill Prime, King Lee-Char recorded a message for his people, but the recording was interrupted when Stormtroopers entered the room and began shooting, resulting in Lee-Char's death. Moff Hubi was also caught in the gunfire and perished. The Rebel team fought their way out and returned to Mon Cala, reuniting with C-3PO, R2-D2, and Tunga.
The Rebels tried to broadcast Lee-Char's recorded message to the Mon Calamari fleet, only to find themselves surrounded by Regent Urtya's Guards. The Mon Calamari Regent seized the recording of Lee-Char's final moments, ultimately deciding to broadcast it to the Mon Calamari fleet himself. Inspired by Lee-Char's words, the Mon Calamari population initiated an uprising against the Imperial forces. Joined by the Millennium Falcon, they attempted to flee the system, but five Imperial II-class Star Destroyers suddenly appeared.
The Star Destroyers launched multiple TIE bombers with the intent of destroying the fleet, which was defenseless and could only watch as the lethal fighters approached. Fortunately, Rebel Admiral Gial Ackbar arrived with squadrons of X-wings and Y-wings as reinforcements, protecting the fleet from the bombers. Despite Ackbar's assistance, the Rebel fleet remained at a disadvantage and trapped. Then, Pysk Lila, the captain of the Aurora Flare, devised a plan. Her ship contained a shipment of highly explosive coaxium.
Lila steered the Flare toward the Imperial blockade, which the Imperial forces dismissed as a desperate act. The Star Destroyers opened fire on the Flare, realizing too late that it carried a volatile payload that would create a breach in the blockade. Imperial Admiral Tyrus Meori commanded his ships to cease firing and take evasive maneuvers, but the order arrived too late to prevent the Aurora Flare from detonating catastrophically. The explosion threw the Imperial forces into disarray, enabling the Mon Cala Mercantile Fleet to escape.
Following the Rebels' escape, the Imperial Star Destroyers initiated an orbital bombardment on Regent Urtya's headquarters, resulting in his death.
