Anthony Daniels

Anthony Daniels, an English actor born on February 21, 1946 in Salisbury, England, is best known for his portrayal and voice work as the droid C-3PO in the Star Wars film franchise. Remarkably, he holds the distinction of being the sole actor credited with appearing in all nine of the main Star Wars saga movies, in addition to Solo: A Star Wars Story, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and the animated movie _Star Wars: The Clone Wars_.

Biography

The character of C-3PO

During the making of the original Star Wars film, Daniels collaborated with George Lucas to shape the character, vocal delivery, and characteristic gestures of C-3PO. Beyond his role as the anxious droid in all nine cinematic installments, Daniels has frequently revisited the part over the last three decades. He has worn the golden suit for a multitude of promotional activities, such as hosting The Making of Star Wars; for appearances on programs like The Muppet Show and Sesame Street; for The Star Wars Holiday Special; for commercials including Kenner toys, a public service announcement against smoking, and even a breakfast cereal inspired by the character; and for prequel associated content like Star Wars Connections and The Science of Star Wars. Furthermore, he lent his voice to C-3PO in a radio play adapted from the original trilogy; for the holiday album Christmas in the Stars; for the Disney theme-park ride Star Tours; for the animated film The Lego Movie; and for animated series like Droids, _Star Wars: Clone Wars, _The Clone Wars, and Star Wars Rebels. For the audio books Dark Force Rising and The Last Command, he provided both the narration and all the character voices.

Other roles

Outside of the C-3PO costume, Daniels makes a cameo appearance in the Outlander nightclub scene early in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones as a character named Dannl Faytonni. Faytonni is also visible at the Galaxies Opera House in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Later, he took on the role of the enslaved worker Tak in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

In addition to playing C-3PO and Dannl Faytonni, Anthony Daniels also portrayed several minor characters such as CZ-3 in A New Hope. The precise number of these additional characters played by Daniels is not known.

Further Star Wars and C-3PO work

He was the only member of the original trilogy cast to provide the voice for his character in all three episodes of National Public Radio's dramatizations of that trilogy. (While Mark Hamill voiced Luke Skywalker for both A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, and Billy Dee Williams voiced Lando Calrissian for The Empire Strikes Back, when the Return of the Jedi adaptation was recorded many years later, Hamill and Williams were replaced by Joshua Fardon and Arye Gross, respectively.)

Daniels penned the foreword for the compiled scripts of the Return of the Jedi radio drama, as their author, Brian Daley, passed away just as the episodes were being recorded. Daniels' other contributions to Star Wars writing include The New Wonder Column for Star Wars Insider magazine and a Legends comic-book story for C-3PO and R2-D2 titled The Protocol Offensive, published by Dark Horse Comics.

In The Phantom Menace, Daniels provided the voice for C-3PO but did not physically appear in the film, as the character was portrayed by a puppet rather than a costume—a prototype version of the protocol droid controlled by another individual. Daniels operated the puppet for 2002's Attack of the Clones, but all scenes featuring the prototype were removed, with the droid's first appearance in the film being Daniels in costume. In this film and 2005's Revenge of the Sith, he also provided vocal overdubs for certain scenes that utilized computer-generated imagery.

Anthony Daniels once again played C-3PO in the desert heat for The Rise of Skywalker.

Daniels served as the host and narrator of Star Wars: In Concert.

Daniels has reprised his role as the voice of C-3PO in numerous animated projects, including Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Owing to his extensive experience with the droid, Daniels was given the opportunity to review scripts prior to voice recording sessions on The Clone Wars with Supervising Director Dave Filoni. During these sessions, Daniels was permitted to suggest alterations to the dialogue to ensure it was consistent with C-3PO's established character. According to Filoni, such adjustments provided the audience with a more genuine performance from a legacy actor.

In 2019, Daniels released his autobiography, I Am C-3PO: The Inside Story.
