Balance of Power in the Airam Sector was a military campaign, a conflict occurring during the Galactic Civil War, between the reigning Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The majority of this campaign took place within the Airam Sector located in the Outer Rim Territories.
Near the Mylok system, Rebel starfighters are attacking an Imperial convoy. This convoy consists of three waves, each with two groups of BFF-1 bulk freighters, each group (Lumin and Mazur) containing four ships. The convoy also includes Assassin-class corvette group Bira, composed of five ships. In response to the convoy's distress signal, the Nebulon-B2 frigate Blue Ruin and its accompanying starfighters arrive to defend the convoy.
The Imperial Strike-class cruisers Asp and Eel engage in combat with the Rebel MC40 cruisers Re and Ta.
Four STRKCs from group Longbow, along with fighter support, initiate an attack on the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser Chie and its own fighter screen.
The Rebel Alliance has discovered a hidden Imperial base located in the Talcim Cluster. From this base, the Empire is dispatching a group of 16 Escort shuttles (E/S group NoShow) carrying biological weapons intended for use against Airam supporters of the Rebellion. The Rebels attempt to intercept these shuttles, and Avenger Squadron is dispatched to reinforce the base's inadequate defenses.
Imperial fighters launch a substantial attack against a small Rebel flotilla. This flotilla includes CRS Odysseus, CRL Zeus and STRKC Thor.
The Imperial-class Star Destroyer Conqueror faces a Rebel strike force consisting of M/FRG Lion, M/FRG Lance and FRG Ornik. According to the Rebel mission briefing, simply forcing the Conqueror to retreat is considered a victory; its destruction is not mandatory. (However, the Conqueror must later be destroyed during a canonical campaign mission in the Rebel campaign, which means its destruction in this battle mission, although technically possible, is not canonical.)
At Depot XLS in the Fondor system, several Imperial capital ships are undergoing maintenance and have powered down. These ships include FRG Fury, ESC Straasa, STRKC Manticore, M/FRG Sicorro, CRV AD88 and 3 ships of Assassin-class corvette (M/CRV) group 192. Rebel starfighters launch a surprise attack on these vulnerable ships, but the ISD Hammer is on its way to reinforce the Imperial defenses.
In a closely matched battle, the Rebel Dreadnaught Karei faces off against the Imperial Strike-class cruiser Ull, along with their respective fighter escorts.
Balance of Power in the Airam Sector is a "Battle" included in the Balance of Power Campaigns expansion for the Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter computer game. It comprises eight distinct missions that are grouped together but do not form a cohesive campaign. These Battles lack a continuous storyline, and the missions are not presented in a specific chronological order.
This Battle is connected to the two campaigns featured in the expansion: Spreading the Rebellion and Imperial Task Force Vengeance. It enriches the narratives of these campaigns by presenting additional conflicts between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire that occurred outside the main storylines. However, the Battle missions are not directly integrated into the campaigns themselves. Their outcomes do not affect the overall storyline, and completing them is not necessary to finish either campaign. Similar to other Battles in the game, they offer balanced missions where players can choose to fight for either side, unlike the campaign missions, where players are restricted to one side and must achieve the mission objective to advance in the campaign.
In all missions on the Rebel side, Rogue Squadron is deployed against the Empire. On the Imperial side, Avenger squadron (flying TIE Avengers) and Talon Squadron (flying Gunboats) play a significant role in most of these scenarios. The fact that Task Force Vengeance was only equipped with these craft during the 7th mission of the Imperial campaign and that Talon squadron didn't exist before that point suggests that the Battle scenarios take place after the 7th Imperial campaign mission in the overall timeline.
While the events of the individual missions can be considered part of the official Star Wars canon, players can choose to play on either side, and the outcome is determined by their actions. Consequently, the definitive canonical outcome of each mission remains ambiguous. Given that the setups of the battles and the participants involved are canonical but the results of the battles are not, it's reasonable to assume that neither side achieved any lasting advantage (such as the destruction of a major starship) during the Battle missions.
