Battle of Anx Minor

The Battle of Anx Minor represents a key engagement near the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. This conflict pitted the Imperial Remnant against the New Republic during the Remnant's final campaign in 17 ABY. Following a series of prior clashes, Admiral Gilad Pellaeon, leading an armada of Imperial Star Destroyers, confronted the New Republic's Third and Fifth Fleets. The battle unfolded above Anx Minor, an Outer Rim world situated deep within Imperial territory. Gial Ackbar, the Mon Calamari Admiral, commanded from the New Republic Star Dreadnought called the Guardian. Ackbar's forces inflicted substantial damage on Pellaeon's ships, compelling the Imperials to withdraw. This defeat was a catalyst, leading Pellaeon and the Remnant to seek peace two years later, ultimately resulting in the official end of the long-standing war.

Prelude

The New Republic and Imperial Remnant clashed one last time.

In the year 17 ABY, as the Galactic Civil War neared its conclusion, the Imperial Remnant, under the leadership of Admiral Gilad Pellaeon, initiated a series of offensives against the New Republic. This action stemmed from the Remnant's apprehension that the Republic was preparing to invade Imperial Space. While the Remnant initially achieved successes in skirmishes at locations like Adumar, Taris, and Champala, the New Republic military swiftly responded to the threat posed by Pellaeon's forces. Gial Ackbar, the Mon Calamari Admiral, took command from the Executor-class Star Dreadnought called the Guardian. He directed the Third and Fifth Fleets of the New Republic Navy into battle against the Imperial forces. Ackbar's leadership resulted in victories at Champala, Ketaris, and Tangrene, forcing Pellaeon to retreat into the core of Imperial territory. These defeats set the scene for a decisive confrontation between the opposing commanders.

The battle

The opposing armadas engaged in combat above Anx Minor, a planet situated in the Outer Rim and located relatively close to the heart of Imperial territory. Ackbar, commanding from the Super Star Destroyer Guardian, led the New Republic Third and Fifth Fleets into battle against Pellaeon's force, which was comprised of Star Destroyers. This Imperial force included two Star Dreadnoughts—the Dominion and the Megador—as well as the Sorannan-class Star Destroyer Rakehell, a vessel used for weapons testing. The ensuing clash between the two fleets proved to be the decisive conclusion of the Imperial Remnant's campaign.

As the battle reached its climax, Ackbar instructed his forces to focus their firepower on the Rakehell. New Republic Intelligence had uncovered a vulnerability in the vessel—a weak point located near its antimatter reservoir. Ackbar ordered his forces to target the armor protecting this reservoir. This concentrated barrage, combined with attacks on the ship's engines, led to the destruction of the weapons testbed and the ignition of its antimatter reservoir. The resulting explosion was of such magnitude that it obliterated six Star Destroyers in the immediate vicinity and inflicted damage on the Megador. Facing defeat, Pellaeon and the remaining Imperial ships retreated from the battle, seeking refuge at the planet Bastion.

Aftermath

The defeat suffered at Anx Minor was one of the factors that prompted Pellaeon to sue for peace two years later.

Ultimately, Pellaeon's ambitious attempt at a final, successful campaign against the New Republic ended in failure. The combined might of the New Republic Third and Fifth Fleets had decimated a significant portion of the Imperial Navy. The Imperial Remnant's territory was reduced to a mere eight sectors in the Outer Rim, and the Raioballo sector, which included Anx Minor, was no longer under their control. This defeat, along with the Republic's subsequent close monitoring of the Remnant in the following years, prompted Pellaeon to assume direct command of the Remnant. In 19 ABY, two years after the defeat at Anx Minor, Pellaeon and the Council of Moffs initiated peace negotiations. The Galactic Civil War formally concluded that year with the signing of the Pellaeon–Gavrisom Treaty.

Behind the scenes

The Battle of Anx Minor was initially referenced in The New Essential Guide to Characters, authored by Daniel Wallace and released in 2002. In this publication, the battle is depicted as occurring after the Corellian Insurrection, although later sources place the battle before this event. The Battle of Anx Minor was subsequently mentioned in The New Essential Chronology, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, and The Essential Atlas, none of which provided further details about the conflict. The Essential Guide to Warfare, published in 2012, offered some additional information regarding the battle.

Some uncertainty has surrounded the dating of the battle. While The New Essential Guide to Characters originally assigned a date of 17 ABY ("[t]hirteen years after Endor"), The New Essential Chronology proposed a broader timeframe of 17–18 ABY for the Empire's final campaign (of which the Battle of Anx Minor was the concluding engagement). The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia simply used 18 ABY as the date of the battle. The Essential Atlas and The Essential Guide to Warfare, the most recent sources to mention the engagement, both adhered to the original dating of 17 ABY.
