Battle on Sevarcos

In the year 4 ABY, specifically in the months succeeding the Battle of Endor, combat unfolded on Sevarcos during a Battle on Sevarcos. This conflict occurred at a spice mine situated on that planet. The New Republic engaged in battle with the forces of the Imperial military at this mining facility. Despite the initial advantage held by the Empire, the situation shifted dramatically when three enslaved individuals—Greybok, Palabar, and Hatchet—released three captive rancors. These creatures then wreaked havoc among the Imperial troops, paving the way for the New Republic's victory and the subsequent emancipation of the enslaved miners.

Prelude

During the Age of the Empire, the Galactic Empire forced numerous alien slaves to work within a spice mine located on the world of Sevarcos. Imperial soldiers, along with at least one Zygerrian overseer, guarded the mine. The conditions were exceedingly harsh, leading to numerous injuries and illnesses among the enslaved population. Discipline was severe; as an example, when the Wookiee named Greybok attempted to escape, he suffered the amputation of one of his arms as a consequence. Rancors were also used as guards, patrolling the outer canyons to deter escape attempts by the slaves.

The battle

Following the Battle of Endor, the Rebel Alliance established a new governing body for the galaxy, known as the New Republic. As the Galactic Civil War expanded across the galaxy, New Republic soldiers were involved in conflicts on various planets, including Sevarcos. The fighting eventually reached the spice mine, resulting in injuries and fatalities among the miners due to the intense combat. Imperial forces initially gained the advantage in their clashes with the New Republic.

In the midst of this intense fighting, three slaves considered their options. While Hatchet, the Weequay, suggested they use the chaos as an opportunity to escape their Imperial masters, Greybok urged his fellow slaves to support the New Republic soldiers. Palabar, the Quarren, concurred with Greybok, arguing that escape would only lead to the Empire pursuing them relentlessly. Greybok then proposed releasing the three rancors held within a nearby corral. Resolving to aid their New Republic liberators, Greybok charged into the battle. He encountered an Imperial soldier in mechanized armor and threw him into a deep crack in the ground.

Executing his plan, Greybok used a large rock to break open the lock on the gate, causing the electric fence surrounding the corral to malfunction. Once the gate was open, the rancors surged out, attacking the Imperial forces. One of the rancors grabbed Greybok and threw him to the ground. At that moment, Greybok was attacked by a Zygerrian slaver who began torturing him with a needler blaster. However, before the slaver could kill him, Hatchet intervened, striking the Zygerrian with a rock and killing him.

Aftermath

Greybok's actions proved to be a turning point, shifting the battle's momentum in favor of the New Republic. Greybok and his companions watched as New Republic soldiers captured the slavers and destroyed the spice containers by throwing them into the fire. One large, rust-red rancor was killed, but the smaller gray-green and rust-red ones managed to escape the battlefield. When Hatchet inquired about the fate of the slaves, a female New Republic soldier responded that they were now free, while kicking a stormtrooper helmet. Greybok, Hatchet, and Palabar then decided to travel the galaxy as free individuals. Later, these three former slaves participated in the liberation of Kashyyyk, an event that brought an end to the Empire's oppression of the Wookiee species.

Behind the scenes

The Battle of Sevarcos was first introduced as an interlude chapter within Chuck Wendig's 2015 novel, Aftermath. The narrative was presented from the perspective of the Wookiee character, Greybok.
