BD explorer droid
BD units, also referred to as BD explorer droids, represented a specific model within the explorer droid category.
Characteristics
These BD units functioned as droid companions, specifically engineered to provide assistance during operations conducted in geographically isolated and perilous regions throughout the galaxy. They were designed to be the ultimate assistant for researchers or explorers who found themselves operating independently in the field, with the ability to navigate across diverse terrains. Due to the collapse of the company that manufactured them, sightings of BD units were relatively uncommon across the galaxy. A similar type of droid, with a similar name, known as the BDX droid, also existed, but it was significantly larger.
History
One notable example of this droid model was BD-1, who served alongside Jedi Master Eno Cordova, and subsequently, the Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis in 14 BBY. Another BD droid was located within a safehouse on the planet Mapuzo. Another BD unit was TA-418, who provided assistance to Doctor Eustacia Okka, a former professor at the Shadow University during the Imperial Era. BD-72 was another BD unit that was owned by Peli Motto around 9 ABY.
Behind the scenes
The initial appearance of the BD unit occurred in the 2019 video game titled Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Its live-action debut took place in "Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian," which was the fifth episode of The Book of Boba Fett, a television series available on Disney+. This episode was released on January 26, 2022.
