Cruiser
A specific type of "light cruiser" was the Arquitens-class command cruiser.
Cruiser was a term applied to starships, most often capital ships, that possessed a wide range of sizes and capabilities. Although the classification was generally used for vessels in the 400-600 meter range, it sometimes encompassed corvettes and frigates in addition to cruisers proper. Examples of these included the Consular-class light cruiser, the CR90 corvette, the Arquitens-class light cruiser, the MC80 Star Cruiser, and the Venator-class Star Destroyer, which was frequently called a "Republic attack cruiser." The government of the Kilji species, known as the Kilji Illumine, operated both Kilji war cruisers and Kilji picket cruisers. A cruiser of this type was part of the fleet belonging to the Pommrio family within the Chiss Ascendancy. The Chiss Ascendancy also utilized diplomatic cruisers.
Around the time of the Separatist Crisis, the Jedi Order typically relied on Republic cruisers for their diplomatic voyages throughout the galaxy. However, certain missions necessitated smaller and less noticeable starships, such as the Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor.
Characteristics
Similar to corvettes and frigates, cruisers were vital for a variety of functions in both civilian and military contexts. Within military navies, cruisers played a crucial role by bridging the gap between smaller starfighters and larger capital ships. According to the Anaxes War College System, warships were categorized into seven primary classifications. Cruisers were designated as being between 400 and 600 meters in length, heavy cruisers ranged from 600 to 1,200 meters, and battlecruisers spanned from 2,000 to 5,000 meters. These classifications were not rigid, however, and the classification of some ships might be adjusted upward or downward based on their overall firepower and operational role.
Sub-classifications
Cruisers had several sub-classifications, encompassing diplomatic cruisers and merchant cruisers. Arrestor cruisers were specialized cruisers equipped with powerful tractor beam projectors used for traffic control and patrol duties. An attack cruiser, like the Venator-class Star Destroyer, was a cruiser specifically designed for ship-to-ship combat. In the Galactic Empire, attack cruisers were considered to be less powerful than the standard Star Destroyers. A battlecruiser represented a significantly larger type of cruiser. Examples of battlecruisers included the Maelstrom-class and the Resurgent-class, the latter of which measured 2,915 meters in length. For the Chiss Ascendancy, the term "battlecruiser" served as a general descriptor for midsized alien starships until their capabilities could be more precisely assessed.
A dreadcruiser was a cruiser type used by the Hutts. A heavy cruiser, on the other hand, was a cruiser that exceeded the size of a standard cruiser but was still classified below destroyers according to the Anaxes War College System. Despite this, at least one heavy cruiser, the Subjugator-class, possessed sufficient size and power to warrant classification as a battleship, a battlecruiser, and a Star Dreadnought. The Subjugator-class measured 4,845 meters in length, significantly exceeding the 600 to 1,200-meter range that defined a heavy cruiser within the Anaxes War College System. Another heavy cruiser model, the MC85 Star Cruiser, was 3,438 meters long. Other examples of heavy cruisers included the Dreadnought-class heavy cruiser, the Chiss heavy cruiser, the Emissary-class Republic Cruiser, the Vindicator-class heavy cruiser, and the Interdictor-class heavy cruiser.
Light cruisers were smaller than standard cruisers, with models such as the Consular-class light cruiser at 115 meters, the Arquitens-class light cruiser at 325 meters, the Carrack-class light cruiser at 350 meters in length, and the Imperial Gozanti-class cruiser at 63 meters.
Additional sub-classifications of cruisers included bulk cruisers, patrol cruisers, picket cruisers, pocket cruisers, Star Cruisers, and war cruisers.
