Clouzon-36 was a particular type of gas, specifically a blue-green one, utilized by starships as a hyperdrive fuel. Certain vacuum-dwelling lifeforms, such as purrgil and grallocs, also inhaled it; the former used it as a power source for their innate ability to jump to hyperspace.
A rare yet potent fuel, Clouzon-36 was considered quite valuable. Sabine Wren stated that a single shipment of reasonable size could fully fuel the entire Phoenix Cell fleet for an entire cycle. The gas proved difficult for standard starship sensors to detect from afar, which complicated the process of pinpointing spills or natural deposits.
To prevent leaks, Clouzon-36 conduits found on starships were typically heavily armored. However, these conduits were sometimes exposed as a consequence of starship engagements. The containers holding the gas were identifiable due to their red-yellow-red-white-red markings.
While some species, like Lasats and humans, couldn't breathe Clouzon-36, others such as Rodians and Moyn could.
During the Imperial Era, the Imperial Security Bureau kept hijacked Clouzon-36 on a permanent watchlist. In 3 BBY, the Ghost's crew raided the Mining Guild's Asteroid Belt Gas Refinery in an attempt to steal Clouzon-36 and replenish the Phoenix Cell's dwindling fuel reserves.
Grand Admiral Balanhai Savit, in his corrupt plan to pilfer components of Project Stardust, used Clouzon-36 canisters to lure grallocs to his freighters. This allowed his crews to fake hyperdrive malfunctions and make their escape from the system. The discovery of minute quantities of the gas inside a dissected gralloc's stomach was instrumental in Thrawn's exposure of Savit's scheme.
During her hunt for the 204th Imperial Fighter Wing, Lieutenant Yrica Quell found trace amounts of Clouzon-36 in the atmosphere of Jiruus. The presence of this hyperdrive fuel was indicative of a significant battle that had occurred there.
