Delphidians comprised a collection of related humanoid sentient species originating from the Delphidian Cluster. This stellar nursery resided on the edge of Wild Space within the Mid Rim. These species shared the characteristic of finely striated, dark gray skin with a leathery feel, yet displayed diversity in other aspects of their physical appearance. While some geneticists posited a shared, ancient lineage, others suggested that they were bioengineered as slaves by a long-gone master race. The Delphidians themselves remained silent on the matter. These species formed a combative confederation established centuries prior to the Galactic Republic's discovery of their star systems. The various Delphidian species communicated using a multitude of dialects, relying on a common tongue that arose to facilitate trade within the Delphidian Cluster.
Sidon Ithano, a Delphidian, concealed his origins by donning a Kaleesh helmet. Ithano and another Delphidian, Durteel Haza, were both present within the castle of the pirate Maz Kanata not long before it was attacked by the First Order, approximately thirty years following the Battle of Endor.
The Delphidian species made its initial appearance through the character of Sidon Ithano in the short story "The Crimson Corsair and the Lost Treasure of Count Dooku." This story was authored by Landry Q. Walker and published in 2015. Ithano subsequently appeared in the movie Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, which premiered later that same year. Neither source explicitly identified the species. The name "Delphidian" was officially given in Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary, a companion reference book written by Pablo Hidalgo that was released alongside the film. Hidalgo later confirmed on Twitter that another character featured in Maz Kanata's castle within the film was also a Delphidian.
