Plot summary

We observe Asajj Ventress, Dooku's apprentice in the ways of the dark side, prior to the Clone Wars. Dooku tasks her with a mission: locating and retrieving his estranged sister, Jenza. During this quest, Ventress unearths details about Dooku's history, while hearing the ghostly voice of her former Jedi Master, Ky Narec, who tries to guide her back to the light.

Through holo-messages, personal journals, and Dooku's own words, Ventress discovers that he was born on Serenno, an Outer Rim planet. His parents, Count Gora and Countess Anya, lived there with their children, Ramil and Jenza. Count Gora ruled Serenno, named after his ancestors who drove the Sith Empire off the planet and restored control to its original inhabitants.

After Dooku's birth, his family found out he was Force sensitive, which scared his father because of his family's history with Force users. Count Gora contacted the Jedi Order to take Dooku away, abandoning him in Serenno's wilderness. The Jedi found Dooku and brought him to their Temple on Coruscant, where he trained as a Jedi.

Years later, in 90 BBY, Dooku returned to Serenno with his friend Sifo-Dyas and a group of Jedi, including Grand Master Yoda. The planet hosted a "showcase for the galaxy," allowing Outer Rim worlds to display their offerings for the Republic. Dooku saw a girl and felt a connection. He saved her from thieves, and they realized they were siblings. His sister, Jenza, showed Dooku and Sifo-Dyas the area, including the Great Assembly, Serenno's Planetary Council building. Dooku learned about "The Tirra'Taka," a dragon legend. He touched a carving of it, and a "groundquake" struck, trapping the children. After the Jedi rescued them, Count Gora was angry about his son's return. Dooku learned about his past, and anger grew in him.

Soon after, Jenza and Dooku began communicating secretly through holo-messages, which the Jedi forbade. Dooku and Sifo-Dyas broke into "The Bogan Collection," a secret collection of Sith artifacts, after learning about it from Klias Teradine's journal. They were caught when Dooku saw the "Tirra'Taka." Dooku told the Jedi, but they dismissed it. However, Lene Kostana, an Altiri Jedi, was concerned. She researched the dark side and ancient Sith Warbeasts, urging the Jedi High Council to take Sith threats seriously and prepare younglings, heeding ancient prophecies.

Dooku wanted to be Kostana's Padawan but instead became Yoda's in 86 BBY. Kostana chose Sifo Dyas. Yoda ignored Dooku, causing him to try to impress Yoda with saber techniques and the Force, including trying to lift "The Great Tree," Yoda's favorite. Dooku failed, and Yoda said, "Ready, are you, my Padawan? Ready to learn what you do not know?"

Dooku and Yoda went on missions to Mantooine, Lahsbane, and Kashyyyk, chronicled in Dooku's journal.

In 85 BBY, Sifo Dyas had visions of destruction on "Protobranch." Dooku, Sifo, and Kostana went to Protobranch against the Council's wishes. The visions came true, destroying Dooku's confidence in the Council and Republic.

Three years later, in 82 BBY, Jenza told Dooku about their mother's death and asked him to the funeral. Dooku told the Council and asked to attend. Kostana and Sifo Dyas went with him. At the funeral, a protest broke out. Dooku protected Jenza, accidentally disturbing his mother's body. Count Gora was angry, and Dooku cut off communication with Jenza.

Before returning, Kostana sought a relic on Asusto. They were ambushed and captured for a dark side ritual, causing Dooku to see his future. Dooku used Force lightning for the first time to kill his captors. Kostana had Dooku and Sifo use a "cleansing ritual" to remove the dark energy.

Years later, Dooku became a Jedi Master, training Rael Averross and Qui-Gon Jinn. Near the end of Qui-Gon's training, they attended the Dragonfire Air Rally, where Dooku's brother Ramil was a contestant. Ramil's speeder was sabotaged. Dooku and Qui-Gon investigated, finding a plot led by a member of the Jedi Council. Dooku joined the Council, feeling change was needed from within.

In 42 BBY, Dooku returned to Serenno after Jenza asked for help. Their father had died, and Ramil continued his selfish rule. The Abyssin invaded Serenno. The Republic refused help because Ramil hadn't paid his debts. Kostana and Sifo Dyas joined Dooku in helping his home world.

On Serenno, the trio met Jenza and discovered the Tirra'Taka, a real being, caused the groundquakes. Dooku realized his presence years ago had awakened the beast, who wanted to be left alone after dark side users abused it.

Dooku learned Ramil had replaced Serenno's military with droids and allowed the Abyssin to invade. During a confrontation, Dooku connected with the Tirra'Taka and summoned it to destroy Ramil's forces. Enraged, Dooku killed Ramil and realized he had abused the Tirra'Taka. Dooku killed the beast.

After Ramil's death and the Abyssin's defeat, Dooku became Count of Serenno and told Yoda and the Jedi Council he was leaving to rebuild his home world and because of his frustrations with the Order.

While tracking Jenza, Ventress argued with the voice of Ky Narec, who urged her to abandon Dooku and the dark side. Ventress located Jenza after she was kidnapped and reunited her with Dooku.

Jenza told Dooku he was lost and a "hooded man" had corrupted him. Ky Narec pleaded with Ventress to turn away from Dooku, saying it was her last chance. A vision of Dooku antagonized both Narec and Ventress. The visions pulled her in opposite directions.

Ventress looked upon a crazed Dooku who commanded her to kill his sister. Ky Narec pleaded one last time, but it was too late. Ventress had succumbed to Darth Tyranus's will.
