The evolutionary path of the Dowutin species began with a type of omnivorous herd animal that inhabited the planet Dowut. These humanoids were imposing in size and appearance, typically featuring chin horns, formidable claws, and a thick hide that was often brown in color. Their eyesight was relatively weak, but they possessed heightened senses of hearing and smell. The Dowutin had substantial fingers terminating in claw-like points, which, due to their thickness and bony composition, resembled tusks more closely. With the capacity to live for hundreds of years, Dowutins experienced continuous growth throughout their lives. Individuals reaching two decades in age approximated the size of Wookiees, while those living to five centuries could attain weights of up to a metric ton. Their immense size often resulted in loud footsteps and voices, serving as a warning to other species. Records indicate that the largest Dowutin weighed over two tons and exceeded four meters in height.
The Dowutin species originated from the frigid planet of Dowut, located in the Core Worlds near the Unknown Regions. Their language was known as Dowuta. They often preferred a solitary existence. From a young age, Dowutins were compelled to survive independently after being expelled from their nests. Only those who rapidly acquired hunting skills were able to endure the harsh wilderness and cold conditions. Their considerable size and strength rendered them valuable as hired muscle, but most Dowutins' pride prevented them from pursuing such roles, as they held other species in low regard.
Legends circulated suggesting that Dowutins did not succumb to death from old age, instead meeting their end in battle or through other means.
Dowutins gained recognition for their mercenaries. One Dowutin participated in a gladiatorial program managed by the Xonti Brothers. The Dowutin endured rigorous training that resulted in the death of three fellow participants. Ultimately, it faced a Wookiee named Krrsantan, the remaining member, and was defeated with a single punch.
A female Dowutin, known as Masana Tide, initially served as a member of the Jedi Order before aligning herself with Emperor Palpatine's Inquisitorius program, ultimately becoming known as the Ninth Sister. [Grummgar](/article/grummgar], another member of this species, was present at Maz Kanata's castle alongside the spy Bazine Netal just prior to the First Order attacked on the castle.
The first visual depiction of the Dowutin occurred in a Vanity Fair article published on May 4, 2015. It featured a group photograph showcasing characters within Maz Kanata's castle during the production of the then-forthcoming film, Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. However, the species' initial appearance predated the release of The Force Awakens through an expansion incorporated into the mobile game Star Wars: Commander.
