Drigor Tarrens

Drigor Tarrens was a scientist of Human descent, specifically a male, originating from a colony situated within the Kathol Outback. This region is a largely unexplored sector of space found inside the broader Kathol sector. He held the conviction that biological technology surpassed traditional, non-living technology. This belief led him to align himself with the Qektoth Confederation, a group of like-minded scientists operating from the Q'Maere Research Facility of the University of Sanbra, located in the Kathol Rift. Following a string of unsuccessful experiments, the scientists disbanded, each pursuing individual goals, with Tarrens joining them. During his time with the Confederation, the organization's focus shifted dramatically. Initially, they were idealistic scientists aiming to protect the galaxy from the perceived risks of conventional technologies. However, they evolved into a militant order advocating for war against those who used technology to, in their view, keep the galaxy's population "enslaved." Tarrens disagreed with this radical shift and discovered a project involving the use of the Confederation's members' genetic material to engineer new life-forms.

Before Tarrens could expose this plan to the rest of the organization, his starfighter was destroyed during takeoff. He survived only through the intervention of cybernetics. Accused of treason, a crime punishable by death, Tarrens sought refuge on the planet Uukaablis, where he was granted political asylum. He lived in seclusion there until 8 ABY, when the crew of the New Republic CR90 corvette FarStar sought his expertise. They had encountered a biochemical agent created by the Confederation and needed a cure. Upon learning that he might also have been exposed, Tarrens directed them to a research facility in the Qu'mock system. After the FarStar delegation's departure, Tarrens realized he was indeed infected and that the New Republic ship's crew was his only hope. Piloting his personal Helix-class light interceptor to the Qu'mock system, Tarrens played a crucial role in helping the FarStar defeat a Qektoth attack cruiser and retrieve the data necessary to develop a cure for the agent.

Biography

Early life

Drigor Tarrens, a male Human, was born in 34 BBY. His birthplace was a colony located on the periphery of the Kathol Rift, a space region characterized by volatile gases and lightstorms, within the Kathol Outback. Around 18 BBY, he came across an abandoned space station in an uninhabited system and recorded its location. Tarrens pursued scientific studies and eventually became a scientist at the Q'Maere Research Facility of the University of Sanbra, situated on the planet Q'Maere within the Kathol Rift. Approximately in 7 BBY, Tarrens joined the Qektoth Confederation, a group of scientists who championed the superiority of biological technology. They believed that traditional, non-biological technology weakened individuals and caused illness and premature death. After experiments involving silicon biology failed to meet their expectations, Tarrens and the Qektoth scientists departed, leaving the facility to the University of Sanbra's staff. He revealed the location of the space station he had discovered years earlier to his colleagues, and the Confederation relocated the station to the Qu'mock system. They renovated and repaired it, using it as a research hub for their experiments.

Qektoth Confederation

The space station discovered by Tarrens that the Qektoth Confederation would use for their own purposes.

As time passed, the Qektoth Confederation transformed from a group of idealistic scientists into a militaristic organization. They desired to wage war against those who, in their view, kept the galaxy weak by relying on inorganic technology. Many original members left, disgusted by this transformation, and Trann Shoame assumed leadership. Under Shoame, the Confederation expanded their research into biological and chemical weapons, preparing to strike at their perceived enemies. Around 2 BBY, the Confederation's leaders initiated a project to create new life-forms with enhanced abilities. They collected cell samples from all members, planning to use them in their experiments. Tarrens learned of this project and was troubled by it. He intended to report his findings, but the Y-wing he planned to travel in exploded shortly after takeoff from a secret base near the Kathol Rift.

Tarrens was rescued from the wreckage of the starfighter and unknowingly repaired with cybernetic systems by Confederation doctors. Upon waking from surgery, he was summoned to face a court on charges of treason, punishable by death under Confederation law. Tarrens escaped, fleeing to the planet Uukaablis and requesting political asylum. The native Uukaablians, known for their medical technology skills, granted his request. Tarrens became a recluse on Uukaablis, living in a cave in a forest away from the Uukaablian cities. At some point, he acquired a Helix-class light interceptor.

Arrival of the FarStar

In 8 ABY, members of the New Republic CR90 corvette FarStar's crew approached Tarrens seeking help. They had encountered a biochemical agent created by the Qektoth Confederation that was rapidly infecting the ship's crew. They initially sought the Uukaablians' advanced medical assistance, but the aliens couldn't help and directed them to Tarrens. He initially refused, wanting no further contact with the Confederation. However, when the FarStar delegation informed him that the agent was contagious and that he might also be exposed, he relented. He provided the coordinates for the Qektoth research facility in the Qu'mock system, a day's hyperspace journey from Uukaablis. He told Captain Kaiya Adrimetrum, the FarStar's commanding officer, that she would find computer files on the station to develop an antidote and requested she return with it.

A Helix-class light interceptor

After the FarStar crew left, Tarrens discovered he had been infected by the biochemical agent through his brief contact with them. Realizing his survival depended on the FarStar's success, he took his Helix light interceptor to the Qu'mock system to help. Arriving during a battle between the FarStar and a Qektoth attack cruiser near the space station, he learned that the corvette had a raiding party aboard the Confederation facility trying to recover the information. However, the small force was trapped in the station's hangar bay because the Confederation had locked the exits and initiated self-destruct. Tarrens used his knowledge of Confederation command codes to remotely override the security locks, opening the hangar doors and allowing the FarStar's raiding party to escape. Joining the battle between the capital ships, he revealed that the attack cruiser had a weakness: due to the energy needs of its unique weaponry, the ship could only maintain its shields in a single fire arc while using them. Tarrens suggested using the FarStar, the raiding party's Aegis-class Combat Shuttle, and his interceptor to attack from multiple angles. His assistance led to the FarStar's victory.

Back on Uukaablis, the Uukaablians used the recovered data to create a cure, treating Tarrens and the FarStar crew. While waiting for the antidote, Tarrens revealed his past to the New Republic delegation, admitting he had wanted to hide from the Confederation until his death. However, his experiences with the FarStar crew changed his mind, and he hoped to atone for his past actions.

Personality and traits

Drigor Tarrens, standing just under 1.75 meters tall, wore his brown hair in thick braids down his back, which were beginning to gray by 8 ABY. As a scientist, he believed in the superiority of biological technology, leading him to join the Qektoth Confederation. However, he disagreed with their militaristic views and their plan to create new life-forms using genetic samples from their members.

Living on Uukaablis, Tarrens learned the local language and had knowledge of other cultures and planetary systems. He was also familiar with bureaucracy and could swim. Tarrens also possessed a strong sense of self-preservation, fleeing the Confederation when threatened and assisting the FarStar crew when he realized his survival depended on their success.

Skills and abilities

Despite his belief in biotechnology, Drigor Tarrens used technological items like starfighters, blaster rifles, and his cybernetic eye. He could operate repulsorlift craft, fly space transports, plot courses through space and hyperspace, and use capital ship weapons. He had experience in droid programming and repair and could repair blasters. He was also experienced in melee combat and operating vehicle-mounted blasters.

Equipment

Drigor Tarrens was trained to use a blaster and possessed a heavy blaster and a hold-out pistol for emergencies. His left eye was replaced by a cybernetic one that stared straight ahead regardless of his other eye's direction. Besides weapons, Tarrens typically wore a blast vest and carried a comlink. By 8 ABY, he owned and operated a Helix-class light interceptor manufactured by Arakyd Industries.
