Drill freighters represented a class of freighter utilized by the Galactic Republic during the age of the High Republic Era. During the year 232 BBY, a fragment from the freighter known as Legacy Run, an Emergence stemming from the Great Hyperspace Disaster, impacted Praknat 3, a moon within the Trymant system. This collision disrupted the system's gravitational equilibrium, causing the planet Trymant IV to incline towards the system's second sun. Consequently, the aboveground water reserves of Trymant IV underwent immediate vaporization.
By the time 231 BBY arrived, the Republic dispatched a fleet consisting of drill freighters. Their mission was to locate potential subterranean water reserves situated beneath the planet's lower valley region. While visiting the planet in that year, Jedi Master Kantam Sy shared information with Jedi Padawan Lula Talisola regarding the efforts of Trymant IV's inhabitants to sustain life despite the extensive destruction, mentioning that they were aware of the freighters sent to aid in the search for water sources.
The existence of drill freighters was first brought to light in Race to Crashpoint Tower, a young adult novel published in 2021. This book was penned by Daniel José Older and forms a part of Phase I of the larger Star Wars: The High Republic multi-platform narrative.
