Legacy Run

The vessel known as the Legacy Run was a Class A modular freight transport that met its end during the Great Hyperspace Disaster. The resulting wreckage was scattered across the galaxy via the pathways of hyperspace.

Description

Fragments of the Legacy Run

The Kaniff Yards corporation produced the Legacy Run as a Class A modular freight transport. Similar to other ships of its class, it featured a sizable central area in the form of an elongated triangular prism, with the engineering section situated at the rear. The remaining space was dedicated to accommodating cargo. Extended boom arms connected the bridge to the central compartment, also providing passage to and from the bridge. The vessel's modular design allowed for the attachment of up to 144 smaller modules to the central compartment, enabling the ship's configuration to be adjusted based on the specific cargo being transported. These modifications could include converting half of the cargo area into a massive aquarium or adding modules capable of carrying as many as 9,000 passengers.

At the time of its demise, the Legacy Run had been in service for well over a century, making it more than twice the age of its final captain, Hedda Casset. While somewhat aged, Casset ensured that the vessel remained in excellent working order.

History

Legacy Run explodes in hyperspace.

The Legacy Run was constructed more than a century before 232 BBY and eventually became the property of the Byne Guild. Eventually, command of the vessel passed to Hedda Casset, a former military officer with experience in the Malastare-Sullust Joint Task Force. Casset maintained strict discipline and ensured that both the Legacy Run and its crew were in prime condition. On one occasion, the Legacy Run transported a saberfish from Tibrin to Abregado-rae for placement in a countess' private aquarium. However, when the fish fell ill due to the noblewoman's staff lacking the knowledge to care for it, the countess covered the full cost of returning the animal to Tibrin.

During its final voyage in 232 BBY, the Legacy Run was transporting thousands of colonists from the Core Worlds and Colonies to the Outer Rim Territories, traveling along the well-established hyperlane known as the Corellian Run. Among the passengers were humans, Ardennians, Givin, and at least one Lannik. On the bridge, Casset delegated command to her first officer, Jary Bowman, to conduct her routine inspections. In the ship's informal gathering area, Casset spoke with a young boy, Serj Ukkarian, who requested more entertainment holos. She instructed him to cease attempting to breach the ship's database for age-restricted content. Continuing her rounds, Casset verified the secure storage of a shipment of liquid tibanna and the progress of ongoing repairs to the Legacy Run's environmental systems. Satisfied with her findings, Casset returned to the bridge.

Shortly after Casset resumed her command from Bowman, an alarm sounded, indicating the imminent approach of a mass shadow with only ten seconds until impact. Drawing on her experience as a starfighter pilot, Casset assumed manual control of the Legacy Run in an attempt to evade the unexpected obstacle. However, the aging starship suffered critical structural failure. Casset's final act was to seal the bulkhead doors of the passenger compartments, hoping to save some of the colonists, before the bridge was destroyed. The demise of the Legacy Run marked the beginning of the Great Hyperspace Disaster, as debris from the ship was propelled across the galaxy through hyperspace, prompting the Republic and Jedi to initiate a massive rescue operation for those stranded by the catastrophe. The reappearance of fragments of the ship became known as Emergences.

The mass shadow was eventually identified as a Nihil Stormship traveling through hyperspace using a Path, an unconventional method of hyperspace travel made possible by their secretive Path engines. The ship had been deliberately directed onto that course by Marchion Ro, the Eye of the Nihil, with the specific intention of causing a disaster. Ro later boasted about the catastrophe to the captured Jedi Master Loden Greatstorm, who was being held captive aboard Ro's flagship, the Gaze Electric.

Commanders and crew

Hedda Casset, a former military officer with service in the Mallust JTF, was the final captain of the Legacy Run. She maintained a disciplined crew and kept the ship in excellent condition, despite its age. Lieutenant Jary Bowman served as the ship's executive officer, taking over command while Casset conducted her inspections. Both Casset and Bowman perished when the ship's bridge was destroyed. Other crew members included the Quermian Cadet Kalwar, who alerted Casset to the approaching obstacle. Casset considered Kalwar to be only slightly older than the child Serj Ukkarian.

Behind the scenes

Concept art of the Eravana which inspired the Legacy Run

The Legacy Run makes an appearance in the novel The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, authored by Charles Soule. It was published on January 5, 2021. The design of the starship drew inspiration from an unused concept for the Eravana created for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.

An early draft of the first chapter, released in June 2020, described the Legacy Run as being sixty years old. However, the final version indicates that the ship was more than twice the age of Captain Casset.
