Dybbuk was a yellow-green, star-shaped, and fleshy parasitic organism. The Galactic Republic employed this creature during the High Republic Era as a method for controlling unruly criminals. This parasite, measuring 0.25 meters across, would attach itself to an organism's mouth, thereby influencing their mind and inducing a changed mental state, all while emitting a distinctive squelching noise.
In 132 BBY, this parasite was utilized to subdue a human convict aboard the Republic prisoner transport Palwick, which was en route to Coruscant, the galactic capital. During a prisoner escape attempt on the ship, which resulted in the vessel exiting hyperspace close to the snowy planet Carlac, meknek Osha Aniseya employed her repair droid, Pip, to deliver an electric shock to the parasite attached to the convict. This electrical discharge caused the dybbuk to release the convict, freeing him, and causing the dybbuk to flee the ship into space with a chittering sound before the ship entered Carlac's atmosphere and subsequently crash-landed.
The Dybbuk made its debut in "Lost / Found," the inaugural episode of the live-action series titled The Acolyte. This episode was broadcast on Disney+ on June 4, 2024. Prior to its streaming release, the episode was initially screened in select theaters across the United States on June 3, 2024.
