Pip

Pip functioned as a PIP maintenance droid assisting Verosha "Osha" Aniseya during the era of the High Republic.

Biography

Prior to 132 BBY, Osha acquired Pip as her property. This droid provided aid to her in her occupation as a meknek, specifically carrying out repairs on the external hulls of starships. When two Jedi, namely Yord Fandar along with Tasi Lowa, placed Osha under arrest as a suspect regarding the death of Jedi Master Indara, Pip was also taken into custody by them.

While onboard the prison ship called Palwick, the majority of the prisoners initiated a mutiny, resulting in the abandonment of the vessel via an escape pod, which left Osha and Pip in confinement. The ship's rocking caused Pip to be within Osha's reach, and together, they managed to unlock her cell. Pip's welding tool was also used to free the remaining prisoner from the dybbuk parasite that had immobilized him, but that prisoner immediately escaped in the ship's other escape pod, causing Pip and Osha to crash land on the planet Carlac.

Master Sol located Osha and requested her assistance in identifying Indara's murderer, who Osha now suspected was her twin sister, Mae. Pip lent a hand to Osha and Sol during the next phase of their investigation. He achieved synchronization with Sol's transport shuttle to optimize its performance. When Osha briefly went undercover, pretending to be Mae on the planet Olega, she brought Pip with her to record and transmit her conversation. Subsequently, when the Jedi attempted to apprehend Mae, Sol instructed Osha to stay out of it; however, with Pip's support, she successfully tapped into the Jedi comms to eavesdrop on the pursuit and chase after Mae independently.

After the events on Olega, the Jedi made their way back to the Jedi Temple located on Coruscant, accompanied by Osha and Pip. Within the temple, Pip underwent a complete servicing, restoring him to a like-new condition. He playfully scolded Osha for her inadequate maintenance, to which she responded that she lacked the necessary tools. Osha then brought Pip with her as she joined the Jedi on their Mission to Khofar. During the briefing session, the tracker Bazil emitted a menacing growl upon noticing Pip's movements within his pouch. In response, Pip sprayed him with water.

Following the eruption of a conflict between the Stranger and the Jedi, Osha detached Pip's head and expressed her affection for him. Subsequently, she activated the light on Pip's head and used it to stab the Stranger in the back. The Sith retaliated by swinging his lightsaber in defense, but Sol intervened to protect Osha. A group of umbramoths then descended upon the Stranger, who withdrew after eliminating a few of them. Later, Bazil discovered Pip's head not long after the Stranger had slaughtered the umbramoths. As the Sith departed, Bazil retrieved it and sniffed the droid's head before hurrying away.

In the aftermath of the confrontation with the Stranger, which resulted in the demise of every Jedi except for Sol, Bazil returned Pip's head to the ship where Sol and Mae, disguised as Osha, were headed back on. Bazil reactivated Pip, and later after Bazil and Pip attacked the disguised Mae, she reset Pip to factory settings. Pip's light turned red as he reactivated, as opposed to his previous white light.

Characteristics

Pip's diminutive size enabled organic beings to employ him as a sentient, portable tool. Housed within his compact, orange and teal chassis were tools designed for a diverse array of functions, spanning from welding tasks to shipboard diagnostic procedures. He possessed the ability to fold into a compact form, allowing him to fit within a pouch worn by Osha on her belt. Pip's mobility was limited, necessitating him to be carried between locations to facilitate his operational capabilities.

Pip possessed a cheerful and enthusiastic personality, which sometimes proved overwhelming for Osha, particularly during the early hours of the morning.

Behind the scenes

Pip's creation was for the Disney+ live-action series The Acolyte. The development was under the guidance of the experienced creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan. The final design for Pip was credited to designer/modeller Nick Tyrrell.

Scanlan and his team brought Pip's design to life using Autodesk's Fusion software. Pip's onscreen portrayal involved the use of a handheld prop, which the actors could manipulate by opening, closing, and otherwise interacting with it.

Jack Parker, a puppeteer, operated Pip on set during the filming of The Acolyte, drawing inspiration for the performance from his newborn daughter.
